About us

The Kaitags are an indigenous ethnic group living in modern Dagestan. Our language belongs to the Dargwic branch of the East Caucasian family. The Kaitag ethnic zone extends from the lowlands to the mountains along the Ulluchay River in South Dagestan. In the beginning of XX century there were 58 mountain villages constituting six historical regions. Kaitags neighbor closely related Dargins and Kubachins on the north-west, the Lezgic populations of Tabasarans and Aghuls on the south-west, and the Turkic populations of Kumyks and Terkemens on the East. Historically there was also a significant Iranian population of Juhuri (Mountain Jews). Just like the other peoples of Dagestan, Kaitags followed strong endogamy. However, the access to the Caspian lowlands with its trade routes and its cultural exchange as well as the vivid history and the diverse ethnic composition of the region all shaped Kaitags to be a peculiar part of the East Caucasian mosaic.
