About us
As of fall 2024, we have more than 150 men of Kidd descent in the Kidd Y-DNA study.
Questions about these results may be directed to Sandra Kidd, co-administrator of the study, at skkidd@bellsouth.net
The Y-DNA results can be viewed under a separate tab labeled “YDNA Results”. For help in understanding participants’ results, the participants have been broken into several SUBGROUPS.
The SUBGROUPS are based on two factors:
1) known genealogical “paper trail” or research on a given line. The knowledge and generous sharing of information from many Kidd researchers helps us to determine how a given line may fit into the Kidd family tree. Y-DNA results can be most useful when you share with the administrators the name of your earliest known Kidd ancestor and where and when he lived. You do not have to know your entire family tree to take part in Y-DNA testing, and Sandra Kidd will help you with your Kidd genealogy questions.
2) the Y-DNA results, especially where variations, called mutations, show up in a set of markers. If a mutation is distinctive for a particular subgroup, it can help to define how that subgroup branches off from the main family tree.
The two major SUBGROUPS for the Kidd Y-DNA study are for Kidds of Virginia origin, and each participant has close genetic connections with others in their subgroup:
GROUP 1: Virginia Kidds who are known or suspected descendants of Thomas Kidd, the immigrant to by 1646. Most of the men in this group descend through, or are suspected to descend through, Thomas’s younger son William Kidd of Middlesex Co . Because Group 1 is the largest group of participants, it is divided into three subgroups, based on known genealogy and one significant variation in Y-DNA markers.
Also a part of Group 1 are several participants whose ancestors have different surnames than Kidd, but who are close genetic matches to the Kidd family. Included in this group is a descendant of Henry Tuggle III who lived in Middlesex and Goochland Cos, VA, the same areas where Thomas Kidd descendants lived.
GROUP 2: Virginia Kidds and Waldens who are descendants of Kidd families of Middlesex and Caroline Cos, VA. Exhaustive research into the first three generations of Kidds in points to only one immigrant ancestor Thomas Kidd, who by 1646 was in the area that became . However, Group 1 and Group 2 do not have a close genetic connection—so research on this question continues.
Several descendants of John Walden of VA are closely connected to Group 2 in the Kidd Y-DNA study. John Walden was raised by the Walden family but genetically is part of the Kidd Group 2, pointing to an unknown father with the surname Kidd.
The Kidd Y-DNA study is broken into additional subgroups:
-
I haplogroup Kidds known to have emigrated from to MD/SC and who share a common ancestor
-
Scotland origins Kidds who may share a common ancestor (24/25 match)
-
Ungrouped Kidds with American origins, whose genetic results do not point to a common Kidd ancestor
-
Ungrouped Kidds with British origins, whose genetic results do not point to a common ancestor
-
Members whose origins are not yet known or who do not have matches in the Kidd study are listed under Ungrouped (general)
-
Members with surnames that are variants of Kidd, such as Kiddie, Kiddoo, Kidder, and Kiddell, are listed under Variant Surnames
Participants are listed by kit number and earliest known ancestor for privacy reasons. To inquire about these lineages, please contact Sandra Kidd at skkidd@bellsouth.net. Many of the participants are very interested in sharing information with other descendants.
Some participants have elected to share biographies for the Kidd Y-DNA website. See the end of this page for participants' bios.
The results break down into a number of identified Kidd groups, and two sets of ungrouped results.
Group 1: origins
Group 1 breaks down into three subgroups. All of the participants in this group have origins, and all believe they are descended from Thomas Kidd of Middlesex Co, Virginia, immigrant to by 1646. Thomas Kidd married Jane and had two sons Thomas Jr. and William. Thomas Kidd the immigrant died in 1680. His son Thomas Jr. was born ca 1670 and died in 1727. His son William was born in 1675 and also died in 1727. Thomas Kidd Jr. had sons Thomas III, John, Daniel, and William who survived to adulthood. William Kidd had sons William, Robert, John, James, Aaron, Moses, Duel, and likely Benjamin who survived to adulthood.
Y-DNA results link all the men in Group 1 as closely related, but only three participants, all in Group 1A, have fully documented family trees for each generation back to Thomas Kidd the immigrant, all through his son William Kidd.
Group 1A, Group 1B
Participant 54404 is a proven descendant of Aaron Kidd, son of William Kidd and grandson of Thomas Kidd the immigrant.
Participants 59016 and 166558 are both proven descendants of James Kidd, son of William Kidd and grandson of Thomas Kidd the immigrant.
Four members of Group 1A are exact matches at 37 markers, and three of these have tested to 67 markers and are exact matches. Two participants have tested to 111 markers and have a close match at the 111-marker level.
Every participant in Group 1 (A, B, or C) has a genetic distance of 0 to 4 (based on 37 markers) from the modal haplotype represented by Group 1, which is considered the Thomas Kidd the immigrant haplotype.
The younger son of Thomas Kidd the immigrant was William Kidd. William and his wife Margaret both died within one month of each other in the spring of 1727 in Middlesex Co VA. After their parents’ deaths, six of William’s sons and one daughter migrated to central , settling in the area that is now divided among the counties of Goochland, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Buckingham, Amherst, and Nelson. The six sons were Robert (no known family), John who married Ruth Parish/Farish, James who married Eliza Webb, Aaron who married Susannah (maiden name not known), Moses who married Dorothy (maiden name not known), and Duell who married widow Mary Sorrow. The daughter was Margaret who married John Southern. Based on current research, members of Group 1A and IB are known or suspected to descend from one of these six sons of William Kidd, especially if they have ties to one of the central counties listed above.
Group 1C are all known or suspected descendants of Benjamin Kidd, who married Judith Chowning. Benjamin is believed to be the youngest son of William and Margaret Kidd; he remained in Middlesex Co.
One of Benjamin's and Judith's sons, Chowning Kidd, stayed in Middlesex Co. Two of Benjamin Kidd’s sons, George and Benjamin, moved to Amelia Co VA from Middlesex Co VA around the time of their father’s death in 1761. New research shows that Benjamin Kidd (known as Benjamin Kidd Sr. after his father's death) soon returned to Middlesex Co. A number of descendants of Benjamin Kidd Sr. and Chowning Kidd have been positively identified in the last two months. The fate of Benjamin and Judith's fourth known son, Henry, is not known. Most of the members of Group 1C are descendants of George Kidd, who moved to Amelia Co VA. Two are descendants of Henry Kidd and Catherine Seward, through their son James Kidd who married Sarah Bristow and moved first to Mercer Co Ohio and then to the Richland Co Wisconsin area.
Two men also match Group 1C for whom research continues. One of these is a descendant of William Kidd (1774-1832) of Middlesex Co who was a U.S. Army soldier from Middlesex Co VA and who moved to Missouri before 1820, to what is today St. Louis County. One is a descendant of Richard Henry Kidd (1812-1855) of Hardin Co, Ohio.
The oldest son of William and Margaret Kidd was William Kidd, b ca 1700, who married Elizabeth Thurston 13 Nov 1728 in Middlesex Co VA. William was not listed in the Christ Church Parish christening records but was proven as a son of William Kidd by his being named in the Kidd v Kidd 1741 lawsuit in Middlesex Co VA and identified as the son of the elder William Kidd. The Kidd Y-DNA study has no known descendants of this William Kidd, so research continues to identify his possible descendants. He had known sons named John and William.
Members of Group 1A:

Group 1C includes proven descendants of Benjamin Kidd (1714-1761) of Middlesex Co, VA,who married Judith Chowning in 1736 in Middlesex Co. This group has proven a number of new family connections through Y-DNA evidence and genealogical research.
The oldest son of William and Margaret Kidd was William Kidd, b ca 1700, who married Elizabeth Thurston. William had two known sons William and John. He has no fully documented descendants so research on his family continues.

Group 1C:
46060 is a descendant of Benjamin Kidd Sr., born about 1714 (presumably inMiddlesex Co., VA). In 1736, Benjamin married Judith Chowning in Middlesex Co.,and he died there in 1761.
His parents are unproven at this time. He is strongly believed to be the son of William Kidd (1675-1727, the son of immigrant Thomas Kidd (1625-1680) and his wife Margaret, but this is unproven. His birth is not recorded in the register, whereas most of the other children of this couple are listed there, except eldest son William. Attributed Benjamin to this couple because he is not listed as the son of Thomas Kidd, Jr. in Thomas's probate records, and there appears to be no other male Kidd to attribute him to.
Benjamin’s eldest son, George Kidd, Sr., born in 1737 in Middlesex Co., VA, was the executor of Benjamin’s estate, and shortly after performing that duty moved with his family to Amelia Co., VA.; he died there in 1797.
George Sr.’s second son, Lodawick Kidd, was born about 1765 in VA, and died in Tippah Co., MS in 1856. He had preceded several of his sons to this area, and was joined by them in 1848.
Lodawick’s eldest son, William Kidd (1797, VA – 1883, Benton Co., MS) outlived two wives and fathered 15 children. Kits 46060 and 70923 descend from Eutimeous Elanious Canaugh “Tim” Kidd (1846, VA – 1906, Benton Co., MS), one of the younger sons.
For more information on this line, please contact Reiley Kidd at radcrk ATcomcast.net
70923 is the father of 46060, and shares his direct line of descent. Interestingly, there is one one-step mutation between father and son, at DYS#460.
68936 is also a descendant of Benjamin Kidd Sr., born about 1714 (presumably in Middlesex Co., VA). In 1736, Benjamin married Judith Chowning in Middlesex Co.,and he died there in 1761 (described in more detail under 46060 above). Benjamin’s eldest son, George Kidd, Sr., born in 1737 in Middlesex Co., VA, was the executor of Benjamin’s will, and shortly after performing that duty moved with his family to Amelia Co., VA.; he died there in 1797. George Sr.’s eldest son, George Jr. (1763, Amelia Co., VA – 1844, Amelia Co.,VA) and his wife Mary Ann Southall were the parents of 4 girls and two sons. Their eldest son, James Kidd, was born about 1794; he served in the War of 1812, and received bounty land in for this service. In 1828 he moved west with his family to Greene Co., KY, and later moved to Barren Co., KY. In 1852 he moved west, to Grayson Co., TX, where he died in 1882. James’ son, John Tinsley Kidd (1836, KY – 1921, TX) had 8 children, the youngest being William Henry Kidd, the grandfather of the donor for Kit 68936. William Henry Kidd was born in 1866 in TX, and died there in 1950. For more information on this line, please contact Reiley Kidd at radcrk AT comcast.net

My father informed me our Kidd roots were Scottish; the only James Kidd marriage to a Margarett (nee Hutton, daughter ofRev William Hutton) found on record was in 1772, South Leith, Edinburgh,Scotland (IGI) - James was a Ships Master of South Leith (captain of at least 3 London-Leith traders: 'Betsey', 'Duke of Gloucester' and owner of 'Wemyss'), recorded last resident in Leith in 1774, 1776 and 1778 (though not later than1779). He relocated to ~1780, as captain of "Robert and Jane", a troops/prisoner transporter in the American War of from 1780-1784, sailing to Charles Town, S. Carolina, and .The 'Peggy' was a sloop trading between and Koninklijke, (1784-88). His final ship was 'Ann' another trader between / and . Margarett independently owned a shop in , (1792-98; likely part-inheritancegiven by milliner sister, Sibella Hutton, in1791). They were Royalists (George III reign) and had decided to live near King George's residence in Windsor.
John Kidd married Elizabeth North in 1801, Winkfield, and had three sons James (1803-62), George (1807-56) and John (1809-76), all married with children.
