Background

The Lumsden DNA Project has been set up to collect and study DNA data from male Lumsdens (all spellings) in order to:

 - Build up information on the origins of the various Lumsden lines.

 - Try to connect lines and individuals within these lines to their “relatives”

 - Help researchers to understand the history of the family and its branches.

All information linking names to results will be kept strictly confidential unless written permission is received by the project administrator, who is Archie Lumsden from Scotland, Sennachie (historian) to the Chief of Lumsden, Gillem Lumsden of that Ilk and Blanerne. He maintains a database of Lumsdens and Lumsden families throughout the world.


Participants.   Since a Surname Project in essence traces members of a family who share a common surname, the tested individual must be a male Lumsden who wishes to check his paternal line (father's father's father's). Females should encourage a brother or cousin with that surname to be tested.

Females and indeed males can also order the mtDNA or mtDNAPlus test, which traces the maternal line (mother's mother's mother's...) but the results of this test cannot be tied to the Surname Project. This test should take you back to one of the “Seven Daughters of Eve” who are the ancestors of all those of European descent.


DNA to be tested. The Human has 46 Chromosomes. Our project tests only a part of the Y male chromosome at 12, 25, or 37 marker loci sites to match these same markers with men who are potentially related. This test shows kinship and nothing else. The test cannot be used for any paternity, legal or medical reasons, and consists of a simple mouthscrape.  Results of the test will be passed to the participant. If they have joined the Lumsden DNA project the results will also be passed to the Project Administrator and included in the public website.  The samples are stored for 20 years, so that if an additional or extended test is requested, no extra sample is needed. This project encourages participants to be tested at the highest number of markers they can afford (12/25/37/67), but it is recommended that at least a 37 marker test should be taken in order to give a reasonable base for comparison.
