About us
Welcome to the O'Shea yDNA Surname Project!
In the past, it was generally accepted that the O'Shea surname started in County Kerry, Ireland about a thousand years ago. However, details of the complex history of the surname are being established through the O'Shea yDNA Project and we have found that the history of the O'Shea surname is far more complex.
See our O'Shea blog at: http://www.oshea.wordpress.com
The O'Shea Surname Project has established that there are several unconnected male line lineages which have the O'Shea Surname. The project results chart shows the sub-groups of O'Shea lineages which are in the project.
The main sub-groups are listed below:
(i) O'Sheas in Kerry for at least 1000 years - Group 01 including 01a, 01b and 01c
(ii) The Shea/Shee families from in Co. Tipperary and Co. Kilkenny - Group 02
(iii) An extended family of O'Sheas from the Macroom-Millstreet area of NW Co. Cork. This group has been in the NW Cork for at least 500 - Group 03
(iv) A small fourth group of O'Sheas with Kerry origins
(v) Other smaller groups (see results chart)
The O'Shea yDNA Project was set up in 2003, to help individuals find their male line O'Shea connections. The O'Shea yDNA Project is also exploring the history of the surname, using the traditional yDNA STRs (markers) and SNP testing especially the Big Y-700.
The project celebrated its 20 year anniversary in 2023!
