Welcome to the Whitebread and Whitbread Y-DNA Project (also including the name Wheatbread and other related names). The project was set up in May 2007. The Whit(e)bread Y-DNA Project is open to any male bearing the a qualifying Whit(e)bread family name and who is interested in discovering more about the relationships and origins of the various families bearing the name. Participation is an opportunity to uncover information not provided by the paper records, which may help with your research of your family tree. The results of the tests may help you identify which family tree you belong to. 

If you already know which family tree you belong to, participating in the project will help to define the characteristic DNA for that line. The DNA project is an extension to the existing One-Name Study for Whitebread, Whitbread and Wheatbread which is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies. The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and so on back in time. You must be male to take this simple cheek swab test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a WHITBREAD or WHITEBREAD in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to ask a direct line male in your family tree, such as your father, brother, uncle or cousin, to participate and represent your tree. We encourage males who order a Y DNA test to order 37 markers, if possible. If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.

The Y-DNA test results contain no personal information, and the test is quite different from those used by forensic scientists in criminal investigations and by doctors to identify paternity. Furthermore, the test itself cannot identify a unique individual as close male members of the same family (brothers, uncles, cousins) will in all probability have identical results. Tests ordered through this project are charged at the special group rate which provides a substantial saving on the standard FTDNA price. If you have already had your DNA tested with Family Tree DNA individually or as part of another project you are welcome to join this project too. There is no extra charge for joining multiple projects. Simply click on the "JOIN REQUEST" link above, enter your kit number and password and your results will automatically be included in this project as well. 

If you would like to participate, but are unable to afford the cost of a test, please get in touch, as money may be available to pay for your test. This may be dependent on whether you can provide sufficient information about your ancestry for your results to be useful to the project. A General Fund has been established in order to accept donations to assist with the cost of DNA testing of males who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of participation in the project.
