Our project is growing, and we expect to have many exciting discoveries.
Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your family history research. We will also discover which family trees are related. As the project progresses, the results for the various family trees will provide information about the evolution of the surname.
The DNA Project is working with the Pitts one-name study, which is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies, London, England. The surnames Pitts with variants Pits, Pittes, and Pytts are being researched as a one-name study, which is a study of all occurrences of a surname.. You can learn more about this significant research, and the associated family trees by contacting the one-name study.. The one-name study may hold information to assist you with your family history research.

The Y DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a Pitts or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree or take the family finder test.
We encourage males who order a Y DNA test to order the 37 marker test. The 67 marker test is more precise, but it also costs more.
Both males and females can take the Family Finder test. This is an autosomal DNA test which is diluted at each generation and so it only goes back about 5 generations. This is the best test for women to take, but an even better choice for women would be to get a brother or male cousin with the surname Pitts/Pitt to take the y-dna test.
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on. However, the mtDNA test has not proven to be useful for most people because most matches have a common ancestor several hundred or thousands of years ago. In the past we have had some success using this test when there is a theory to test and two people are tested to confirm or refute the theory. Contact the administrators if you are interested in taking this test.
The Y DNA, Family Finder and the mtDNA tests results contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related. This is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.

Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
