Here are the most frequently asked questions about FamilyTreeDNA. If you have additional questions, feel free to visit our Help Center or reach out to our Customer Service team.
If you have previously tested your autosomal DNA at 23andMe©, AncestryDNA™, or MyHeritage™, you can transfer your results to FamilyTreeDNA by uploading your raw data file or by providing an identification number given by an acceptable third-party company. After transferring, your autosomal data is entered into our database, but your DNA sample is not obtained by our company.
Please note that you can only transfer the following versions from 23andMe©, AncestryDNA™, and MyHeritage™:
- 23andMe© V3
- 23andMe© V4
- 23andMe© V5
- AncestryDNA™ V1
- AncestryDNA™ V2
- MyHeritage™(Results received after March 1, 2019)
Unfortunately, 23andMe© V1 and V2 results are incompatible and can not be transferred.

After transferring your results, for free, you will receive a list of your autosomal matches from our database and have access to our Family Finder™ - Matrix. The Matrix feature allows you to select and compare the autosomal DNA relationship between up to ten of your matches at one time.
Note: Family Finder™ is the name of our autosomal DNA test.
After transferring, you can unlock all Family Finder™ features for only $19. This includes:
- Chromosome Browser
- myOrigins®
- ancientOrigins
- Y-DNA haplogroup (genetic males only)
With the free autosomal DNA transfer, you transfer your autosomal DNA by uploading a raw data file to our website or by providing an identification number given by an acceptable third-party company. After transferring, you have free access to your autosomal matches and the Family Finder™ - Matrix. Access to all other Family Finder™ features may come at an additional cost.
When you purchase a Family Finder™ test, we obtain sample DNA from you; once your sample has been analyzed by FamilyTreeDNA, you will have full access to your autosomal matches and all Family Finder™ features.
No. An autosomal DNA transferred data file only contains information on your autosomal DNA.
However, if you are a genetic male, you will receive your Y-DNA haplogroup but no other Y-DNA features such as Y-DNA matches.
