About us
AS OF JANUARY 20, 2020: Through the use of an outside app, we're now able to say with reasonable confidence that all Childers/Childress male Y-DNA testers in this project fall into one of the following family group:
Matched Group 01 - 2 members
Matched Group 02 - 6 members, including the originators of this surname project
Matched Group 03 - 6 members
Matched Group 04 - 3 members
Matched Group 05 - 2 members
Matched Group 06 - Viking Group - 120 members
Matched Group 07 - 2 members
Unmatched Kits - 22 members
TOTAL: 163 Y-DNA TESTERS
Notes on the above:
In four (4) cases the Y-DNA tests ordered were of minimal resolution (12 markers) and would not ordinarily provide enough information for the proper grouping of the tester. However, given the surname attached to the tester and the fact that there were zero mutations at the lowest level, these individuals were placed in one of the groups above. These individuals would be well advised to extend their tests to a minimum of 37 markers to validate our preliminary assessment.
There are numerous examples of non-aligning paternity events in our membership which is not all uncommon in surname projects. These so-called "NPE" relationships historically occurred for a variety of reasons including the use of surnames that were assigned prior to the Norman invasion in Britain, undocumented adoptions, name changes and infidelity. Most occurred many generations ago and are almost impossible to document. That said, we'll try in every way possible to assist each group member to find their correct Childers/Childress lineage.
Those individuals whose surname was not Childers/Childress (or a derivative thereof) and who had no matches in the Y-DNA project were removed from the project, so the resultant list should be wholly germane to our endeavors.
As can be seen from the above groupings of members, about 85% of all male Childers/Childress Y-DNA testers were found to have been of a Viking heritage and specifically traceable back to the "original" American immigrants from England, Philemon and Abraham Childers. All of those members are encouraged to join the James River Viking Childers/Childress surname project which seeks to further refine the families of those sub-clans.
