About us
Welcome to the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP DNA Testing Page. We are a group of descendants of the Jews who lived in Kremenets and surrounding towns since the 14th century. Kremenets is in a border region of western Ukraine. The area was under Polish rule until the partitions of Poland in the 1790s, when it became part of the Russian Empire. The Kremenets area returned to Polish rule during the interwar years, but after the war was shifted to Ukraine.
The CO-OP is translating the vital records of the Kremenets District for the years 1870-1907, as well as many other name-based documents. We are finding that many of the families from Kremenets and the surrounding towns intermarried. By creating a database of DNA from the descendants of Kremenetsers and other towns in the area, and matching the results to the records we are translating, we hope to help you identify missing cousins.
Our 15,000 entry Master Surname Index contains surnames we have extracted from the vital records so far. And our Town Name index has more than 140 towns listed in the vital records. These indexes are available at www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/KremenetsResearchTools.htm.
We invite you to join our project and to share your DNA testing results with us. And, by joining our project you help to support our other activities. If you have any questions, please contact Group Administrator Richard Spector (multicats@yahoo.com) or Co-Administrators Ron Doctor (rondoctor@earthlink.net) or Sheree Roth (ssroth@pacbell.net).
