About us
The McCarty, South Carolina-Edgefield DNA project was formed as an extention of the larger McCarthy project in order to better focus on those of the surnames McCarty, McCarthy, McCartney, McCarter who seemingly originated in and around Edgefield, South Carolina at the close of the Revolutionary War. The goal was to locate male descendants from these early McCarty families and separate their ancestors into kinship groups. The project was successful in sorting out at least 3 distinct and unrelated families that were also neighbors.
Subsequent to this beginning focus, additional McCarty families were also found to be prominent in the southern states, and as a result, those were also included in this project.
Additionally, since FamilyTreeDNA has added mtDNA testing for both male and females, those with ties to the females within these McCarty families have also been included.
This project is opened to anyone with the surname or maternal family name McCarty, McCarthy, McCarter, McCartha, etc. that may have roots in this early historic period of southern American history.
