About us

This is a Walk Through the Y Project approved by FTDNA scientist Thomas Krahn, to provide participants with the opportunity to be involved in original scientific research. The effort to discover new SNPs may enable the large R-U106 haplogroup to split into further subclades, with more regional specificity and a better understanding of migration paths and lines of descent. Please note This project has nothing to do with the R-U106 haplogroup project. Please direct any inquiries about this Walk Through the Y Project to us at the email address above, and NOT to the R1b-U106 Project Admins, a group of great guys, who have enough to do managing their >700 participant project and who have nothing to do with the this WTY-Project. Thanks! If you are sure you want to apply to Thomas and you are sure you want to carry the cost of the WTY-test of $750 yourself, please contact us first at the e-mail address above and we will help you to get everything organised. Please don't contact Thomas directly, as you will first need to be accepted as member of an approved WTY project. This project was set up alongside the existing R1b-L48-WTY Project, that concentrates on the R-L48 haplogroup. This project focusses on the parent R-U106 haplogroup for everybody who was explicitly tested L48-. The names of these projects are similar; therefore: MIND THE X in R-U106xL48WTY !! Initially, the project will be directed by the DYS390 marker, the marker that proved very useful in the prediction of R-L48 membership. Within the R-U106 haplogroup, the dominant values of the DYS390 marker are 23, 24 and 25 (with DYS390=23 highly suggestive of R-L48 membership). Whether DYS390 will be helpful in predicting membership of new R-U106 subclades in the future is unknown.

Project Funding

On the basis of DYS390 we propose to test the following haplotypes and we invite you to take part by sponsoring one or more of these tests that each will cost $750. The individual that gets tested pays at least 50% of the total amount himself. 0. On the form, select "R" as the first number / letter of the group, and scroll down to near the bottom of the list of names to where R-U106xL48WTY appears. Select that and then fill in the rest of the donor info. Please add the note (or send an e-mail) to tell us which test you want to support and if you allow your name to be mentioned in the budget status below. We thank all people involved for their support !!

Project Status

In addition to the project-funded tests mentioned above, a number of people decided to order a WTY-test (and therefore carry the full cost) themselves. Consequently, on behalf of our project the following tests are currently planned and/or in progress:

For the R-L48 subclade of R-U106, a brother project has been set up; its web site can be found here. In the R-U198 subclade, there does not seem to be any interest at this moment to take part in new developments like the WTY-Programme. Currently, there are no official results available for any of the R-U106xL48WTY tests. On the other hand, we do have preliminary results available for test items 1-3 and 5. In these four tests, three new R-U106 SNPs have been discovered and these SNPs are presented in the table below. Only the first of these SNPs can currently be ordered with FT-DNA, as indicated in the column Test.

Apart from these SNPs another uncommon feature has been discovered in test item #1. As part of the WTY test, currently all samples are tested for DYS464X. This is an extension of the standard DYS464 test, that adds a letter to each of the four to seven alleles that result from the normal DYS464 test. Sample #1 proved to be DYS464X = 15c-15g-17g-18c, or ccgg for short, which is an uncommon value in R-U106, as most are cccg. An earlier discovery of such a pattern in the R-P312 haplogroup lead to the discovery of the Leinster cluster, a set of haplotypes that are all ccgg and have a common background in the Irish Leinster region. We are currently investigating the meaning of this result in haplogroup R-U106. While we were waiting for the results of the WTY-test, a new SNP was discovered in the FT-DNA lab (it has been said, that this SNP was discovered accidentally during a "normal" Deep Clade test. This SNP is now called L217. As the person with whom this SNP was found choose to remain anonymous, we currently know nothing more about this SNP. The table below specifies the testing status (with FT-DNA !!) of all R-U106* team members (a corresponding table for the R-L1 members will be added when the first results are available). The SNPs that were found during the WTY and all WTY test results are in red (not all of these test results might be officially available), all 23andMe test results are in green and all FT-DNA "classical SNP test" results are in black. All open entries imply this SNP has not been tested by the person with any lab. The private SNPs L5, L6 and P107 have been left out from this table.

The most up to date diagram of all SNPs below R-M269 can be found here. This diagram is maintained by Thomas Krahn personally and all newly discovered SNPs (such as Vince's brand new L199) appear on this diagram in a matter of days. As of very recently, Thomas is developing a new diagram, that can be found here. Please be aware, that this last diagram is still very much in an experimental phase.
