About us

The Fitz(-)Henry DNA Project welcomes all participants with the following surnames:
Fitzhenry
Fitz-Henry
Fitzsenry
Fitzharris
Fixari (a French variant of Fitzharris)

We also welcome participants with the surname Henry, McHenry and O'Henry, but we are not specifically researching these surnames.

Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your research of your family tree. We will also discover which family trees are related. As the project progresses, the results for the various family trees will provide information on the evolution of the surname.

The surnames Fitzhenry, Fitz-Henry, Fitzharris, Fixari and Fitzsenry are researched as part of the Fitz-Henry one-name study. You can learn more about this significant research, and the associated family trees, by visiting the one-name study web site, or contacting the Group Administrator.

Y DNA testing
The Y DNA test is only available for people who are genetically male to take, as the Y chromosome is passed down from father to son in a direct male line back in time. You should have one of the surnames listed above to take part in our Fitzhenry and Fitzharris study.
If you believe there is a FitzHenry, Fitzharris or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate.
If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree.
For further information please contact me at fitz-henry@one-name.org

We encourage males who order a Y DNA test to order 37 markers, as a minimum number, but would recommend that you order the 67 marker test.
If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.

Autosomal testing (Family Finder)
This is available to both men and women, and looks at all the other chromosomes apart from the Y chromosome, which are passed from both your father and mother.
This test is more useful for finding relations within 8 generations, and it will show you living descendants from both your mother's and father's lines in your match list.

Mitochrondrial DNA testing (mtDNA)
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on. You would order a mtDNA test. For matches in a genealogical time frame, order the mtDNA Plus test.
