This project is open to anyone who has an ancestral line back to the land area that once comprised the Polish-Lithuanian Republic (or Commonwealth) of the 16th-18th centuries, the Rzeczpospolita, as well as the earlier Kingdom of Poland of the 10th-16th centuries. This embraces modern-day Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine. Since Poland was occupied by foreign powers throughout the 19th century, its parts were often known by provincial names like Galicia, Silesia, and White Croatia, or by the names of the occupying Russian, Prussian/German, and Austrian-Hungarian empires. Therefore, an ancestor may be Polish for the purposes of this geographic project even if a passenger list, census form, or birth, death or marriage certificate indicates a different country of origin or ethnicity. Projekt jest przeznaczony dla każdego potomka osoby zamieszkującej tereny ziem polskich - to jest należące dawnego Królestwa Polskiego z X-XVI w. oraz Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów z okresu XVI-XVIII w. (po Unii Polsko-Litewskiej). Ziemie te odpowiadają terenom dzisiejszej Polski, Litwy, Łotwy, Białorusi i Ukrainy. W XIX w. okresie zaborów tereny te funkcjonowały pod lokalnymi nazwami jak: Królestwo Galicji, Śląsk, Księstwo Poznańskie, lub zostały włączone bezpośrednio do struktur państw zaborczych Rosji, Prus i Austrii. Dlatego też obowiązuje kryterium geograficzne, mimo iż polscy przodkowie mogli funkcjonować w dokumentach takich jak metryki, spisy, listy pasażerskie jako mieszkańcy Rosji, Prus czy Austrii.
