About us
The Cundell, Cundall (and variants) Surname Y DNA Project was created to facilitate and co-ordinate Y DNA testing for males bearing variants of the Cundell surname in order to enhance our genealogical research. All Cundells, Cundalls or any other spelling variation are welcome to join the project. Men that have different surnames but have Y DNA signatures closely associated with Cundell or Cundall men or who have reason to believe they have a Cundell or variant patrilineal ancestor are also encouraged to join the Project. Analysis of these genetic relationships will enrich our understanding of our historical connections.
In order to join the Cundell Project, members must complete a Y DNA test with Family Tree DNA. Since only males have Y DNA, females researching their Cundell or Cundall line can join the project by administering a test kit for a Cundell or variant-surnamed family member, such as their father, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, etc. A 37-marker STR test is the minimum test recommended to begin participation in the Project. Higher marker tests (67 or 111 markers or Big Y-700) will allow administrators to group participants with higher confidence. We do not recommend SNP Pack tests.
To participate meaningfully, you will need to share your direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known Cundell in the form of a pedigree chart (excluding living persons).
