As of 2/14/2023, the Ackley Surname Project has 61 participants. Participants have taken a variety of tests available at Family Tree DNA; many have done multiple types of tests.
FAMILY FINDER
Family Finder results have found the following kits that have shared DNA (total amount of shared cM):
Family Finder is an autosomal DNA test. According to International Society of Genetic Genealogists (ISSOG), "Autosomal DNA tests can be used to confirm relationships with a high level of accuracy for parent/child relationships and all relationships up to the second cousin level. For all relationships additional contextual and genealogical information is required to confirm the nature of the relationship." ISOGG also says: "Genealogical relationships beyond the 5th cousin level of relationship are more difficult to prove with autosomal DNA testing..." It is not too surprising that there are not many Family Finder matches between the members of this group. Most of the members of the group are likely to be beyond the 5th cousin range; therefore, the amount of shared DNA would most likely not meet the minimum threshold to be considered a match. The threshold is not necessarily a static number, but the rule is roughly like this: If there is at least one segment > 9 cM, it is a match; if not, then if the total shared DNA is at least 20 cM, then a segment of 7.69 cM or above is a match. For a more detailed explanation, see Blake Bettinger's "The Genetic Genealogist" blog post about the matching algorithm here.
Y-DNA
For a report on the latest Y-DNA results, see this post and this post on the Ackley Family Genealogy blog.
For a more detailed look at individual Y-DNA results, be sure to visit the "DNA Results" link on our project homepage.
mtDNA
Since mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) traces the direct female line of descent and therefore does not trace any one surname, mtDNA results are difficult to summarize and therefore are not covered here.
