The goal of the BARBER Surname Project is to distinguish between BARBER ancestral lines, worldwide. Any reasonable spelling variant is included (please feel free to suggest a variant you feel I have missed). In the special case of the African American lineages, we hope to accomplish perhaps a triangulation of geography, place of labor, and traceability into Africa.

Please note that, at the outset, it makes sense to "cast the net widely." As the number of individuals tested increases and various lines become well defined, I will be more than happy to turn over these lines to other researchers specializing in them. I don't recommend splitting-up the project at the outset because I have a feeling we are in for some surprises with regard to where the divisions belong...
