About us
Surnames are typically passed from generation to generation through the direct paternal line. By gathering and analysing the genealogical Y-DNA test data provided by participants with a known or suspected direct male inheritance of the surname Berkeley, or one of its variants (Berkley, Barkley, Bartley etc.), we aim to help all participants discover, understand and ultimately map their personal DNA lineages.
Given the inaccuracies so often found in written history, the male-line certainties that Y-DNA testing can provide will in time provide the Berkeley Project with a supporting and confirmatory DNA structure for its many existing and future trees. Recorded history still has a role, however, and by using Y-DNA alongside the written record we aim to further verify the surname’s overall historical and geographical progress.
