About us
The purpose of this project is to determine whether several known lines of BRAIDWOOD descendants are related. The BRAIDWOOD surname is not very common, and the family has traditionally believed that all BRAIDWOODs are related, but we have been unable to find records early enough to tie all the various groups of BRAIDWOODs together. All of the BRAIDWOOD families we have found came originally from Scotland, but they are now scattered throughout the world. We have traced several branches of the family, and have been trying for many years to find a common origin for these branches.
The BRAIDWOOD name is known to have been recorded as BROADWOOD in official records. Some genealogists have said the name was recorded as BRAIDWOOD by Scottish scribes and as BROADWOOD by English scribes. We have also found some known BRAIDWOOD families recorded as BRODIE, although the BRAIDWOOD name is not believed to be related to the Highland BRODIE clan. Nevertheless, this name has been used in official records. There are also other variants, including BRADWOOD, BROODWOOD, etc.
This project is open to any male who carries the BRAIDWOOD or BROADWOOD surname, or any variant believed to be related. As a Y-DNA project, the test can only be taken by men, but the project can certainly use, and will appreciate, the support of any female BRAIDWOODs who can help recruit their fathers, sons, brothers, or male cousins to take the test. Please contact the project administrator for more information.
