About us

The goal of the BURTON Surname Project is to distinguish between BURTON ancestral lines, worldwide. Any reasonable spelling variant is included (please feel free to suggest any variant you feel we have missed).

Please note that, at the outset, it makes sense to "cast the net widely." We're happy to have as members any relate surname.

Since the project started in 2004, we have identified nearly 20 distinct lineages. We expect to find others as more men join the project.
Within each lineage, we can examine Y-DNA test results to identify or confirm branches since a common ancestor.

Also please note that, to participate meaningfully, you will need to share your male direct-line ancestry as a pedigree. Alas, FTDNA does not have good facilities for sharing trees. They announced in autumn 2023 a plan to allow FTDNA users to link to a tree at MyHeritage, replacing the trees hosted directly at FTDNA. That has yet to come to pass. In the mean time, you can use the limited native support at FTDNA for tree information, or contact a project administrator directly to share what you know.
