About us
*** Make sure you grant LIMITED access to administrators in your project settings. MINIMAL access should really be called NO ACCESS. Administrators can't help you with analyzing matches unless you give us LIMITED Access. ***
The Carter Surname Project is based upon Y DNA testing for Carter men (or spelling variants); however, it is open to Carter men and women who have a DNA test (Y DNA for men, or an mtDNA test, Family Finder test, or a transfer test from Ancestry or My Heritage for men and women). If you have a Carter family in your pedigree, you are also welcomed to join the project.
We recommend and encourage that Carter men take a Y37 or Big Y test. In most cases, a Y37 STR test will allow us to group you with men who have tested from your Carter family. A Y37 STR test (or a Y111 STR test) will not tell you how close your relationship is to your matches. That is where the Big Y SNP test shines.
The Big Y test allows us to determine an approximate time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) between Big Y testers. This may allow you to break your Carter brick wall. The Big Y test also places you on the Y DNA Haplotree. The Y DNA Haplotree shows how ALL MEN are related, based on the human Y DNA chromosome reference model (theoretical “Adam”). You can use the tree to trace your ancient ancestor’s migration path throughout human history based on DNA samples taken from ancient burials and other archaeological sites.
