Project Background: Names in project; CLEMENT, CLEMENTS, CLEMMONS, CLEMONS, CLEMENS
GOALS: There are no major lines of early Clements missing from the project but additional ones from these early lines are a goal to be realized. Notably, another descendant of the early Haverhill MA line, of Francis Clements of Isle of Wight Co VA, and of Benjamin of Gloucester Co VA, as well as some more of the larger, better known Northern lines, especially those whose later generations were found in the Southern migration, are an addition greatly desired to complete the cross section of Clements ancestors in America.
We are particularly looking for descendants from 2 lines: (1) a PROVEN cousin of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain); and (2) a PROVEN and DOCUMENTED descendant of the brothers Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and James Clements who migrated from Hunterdon Co NJ to Augusta Co VA circa 1740.
RESULTS: The surprising results so far show that most of the early American Clements immigrants were not related to one another.
The largest group of matching test results is Group 12, the family of John Clements of King William Co Va and Hanover Co VA, c.1655-1749, through his sons William, Stephen, and Simon. Son John seems to be the progenitor of many Clements in Petersburg VA in the 1700s, and is now represented by matching DNA results. #27745 has a mutation on the 3rd marker. He also has a 12/12 match with another descendant of his proven ancestor. #19607 has two mutations on the 10th and 11th markers. These participants are a paper trail match for the rest of the group.
The 2nd largest group of matching results is Group 10, the descendants of Clement Joransson and his son, Anders Clementsson (aka Andrew Clements of Sweden and Cecil Co MD.
The 3rd largest group is Group 8 which includes the descendants of Cpt Francis Clement of Surry and Isle of Wight Co VA (1660-1718), the many descendants of Benjamin of Gloucester Co VA (c1655-1715+), through his son George who died in Bertie Co NC in 1729, Benjamin's grandson Peyton Clements c1725-1775 who was in Granville Co NC with Benjamin's son Richard. In early VA, Cpt. Francis of Isle of Wight Co VA 1660-1717 was a probable brother or cousin of Benjamin of Gloucester Co VA b.c. 1655, d.after 1714, as their descendants are a perfect DNA match.
There are a few members in the Project whose DNA does not match with any other person in the project. Test results of members can be viewed by looking at the YDNA RESULTS chart. Additional comments on matching groups:
GROUP 1. Robert Clements 1595-1658 of Haverhill MA 1600s is the ancestor of this group. This Robert Clements migrated from England to Haverhill MA while his sons Abraham and Daniel migrated to Ireland.
GROUP 2. May be related to Group 1 several centuries earlier.
GROUP 3. Descendants of William Clements of Kershaw Dist SC mid 1700s, a possible immigrant landed directly in SC.
GROUP 4. Liverpool England 1800s, and Ireland are the known origins of these participants. One participant descends from Dr John Clements b.c. 1685 who had sons Dr Mace Clements and Henry, of Tappahannock, Essex Co VA. A son William migrated to GA. Results show that he is an 11/12 match for a line emigrating from Liverpool England to Canada c. 1896.
GROUP 5. Samuel Thompson Clemmons of VA and Montgomery Co., NC, b. 1751, was a probable grgrandson of John Clements, 1631-1710 of Surry Co VA. Descendants migrated from NC to Wilson Co TN in the late 1700s.
John Clements b 1631 England, d by 1710, Surry Co VA was imported by Jeremiah Clements into VA in 1635. He married unknown 1st, and Mary (Thompson?) 2nd. John gave deposition in Surry Co VA in 1701 that he was 70 years old. He was a headright for Jeremiah Clements in 1635, and was probably a member of Jeremiah's extended family. He was not a son of Jeremiah as Jeremiah left all his lands to his daughter, Elizabeth Perry. JEREMIAH CLEMENTS HAD NO MALE HEIRS.
Children of John Clements and unknown 1st wife are: i. Hannah Clements, born c 1665; died c 1696 in Surry Co, VA; married Thomas High c 1682. She married 2nd George Foster c 1688. ii. Elizabeth wife of Allen Warren iii. Unnamed daughter (deceased in 1704?) wife of Robert Warren iv. John Clements Jr, born 1676 in Surry County, VA. Died c 1742 in Isle of Wight Co VA. His son Benjamin, b 1735, chose his guardian, John Little, in 1749 at age 14. John Jr first appeared in the Surry Co Tithes list with John Clements Sr in 1692 at age 16, placing his birth in 1676. He may have had children older than Benjamin..
Children of John Clements Sr and 2nd wife, Mary (Thompson?) are; i. Samuel b. before 1704, d.s.p. 1727 ii. Mary Boykin b. before 1704 iii. Anne Adams b. before 1704 iv. William b. after 1704, d. 1741 Surry Co VA wife Alice, children Wm, Samuel, Henry, Elizabeth, and Lucy. Legatee was Samuel Thompson whose name had appeared in every record of this family for 40 years. Son William was probably the William who died in Montgomery Co NC in 1782, whose adm. was Samuel Thompson Clemmons, b 1751. Henry was also in the records in that Montgomery NC area. Thomas High, born c 1647 in Surry County, VA; died Mar 2, 1686 in Southwarke Parish, Surry Co, VA. He was the son of John High and Sallie. He married Hannah Clements c 1682. Hannah Clements, born c1665; died c1696 in Surry Co, VA was the daughter of John Clements and unknown 1st wife.
GROUP 6. All of these participants have independently determined that they descend from John Clements of Charles Co MD, the place of their proven origins. These participants did not know each other prior to DNA testing.
The Clements family of Charles County MD descends from one John Clements (b. 1647), most likely a native of Clopton, Middlesex County, England, who arrived in the colony about 1675. He was a tailor by trade. His wife was Elizabeth Plunkett. Children were; EDWARD, d MD 1751 (ch. Wm 1710-1754 Pr Geo Co., Nehemiah, Ignatious, Edward, John and George) WILLIAM (sons Bennett Hanson d 1777, Oswald, Edward, and William) DNA participant is a proven descendant of Bennett Hanson. JOHN d MD 1733, wife Rosamond McAttee m 1703 (sons Benjamin N b 1715, John, George c 1749, Samuel, Francis d 1793 Montgomery Co MD) JACOB 1681-1755 wife Clare Green (sons, Edward d 1764, Jacob d 1773, Walter, Francis d 1758, George d 1777, and John d 1781). JOSEPH 1692-1766 (sons John, Leonard, Walter, Clement 1725-1775, and Joseph).
Many of the descendants of this family migrated to KY c 1802 in the Catholic Migration from MD to KY. One of the participants in this group descends from Bennett Hanson, son of Wm, son of John of Charles Co MD.
The ancestor of one participant is William Clements, born about 1818 in Maryland with the next three generations being born in Washington, DC.
The ancestor of one participant is Henry Clements, who arrived in Casey Creek (bordering present-day Adair and Casey Counties, KY) in 1802. There has long been solid evidence that he came from Charles County, MD No formal documentation to link him to the descendants of the original John Clements has been found, but DNA test results have proven the point.
The ancestor of one participant is Alfred Charles Clements, son of John Thomas Clements and Priscilla Hagan. John Thomas Clements was the son of William A. Clements, son of Bennett Hanson, Jr., son of Bennett Hanson, Sr., son of William, son of John Clements the tailor of Clopton, Middlesex.
The ancestor of another is proven linage from the DNA participant who is the grandson of Aurther Brona Clements, son of Thomas Howard Clements, son of Luther Mathew Clements, son of Henry Adler Clements, son of Adler Clements, son of Walter Clements, son of Joseph Clements, son of John Clements, the tailor from Middlesex, England. Henry Adler Clements was born after 1774. He migrated to Garrard County, Ky in 1810-1811, from Charles County, MD. (NOTE: This is NOT the same Henry Clements who went to Casey County, KY). Henry Adler Clements died about 1812, leaving a widow with several children. She remarried and moved by 1822 to Tennessee.
GROUP 7. One member possibly descends from Jacob Clements of SC but none of the group has been able to track their ancestors earlier than 1813 in GA. Testing is underway to see if they descend from Andrew Clements who was in GA in 1770. James E Clements b 1813, GA is probably the son or nephew of Andrew Clements b c1780 SC. James E married Mary Ann Elizabeth Peters 1838, Carroll Co GA and moved to Tallapoosa Co AL by 1846. Children were; Newton Denford b 1839, James Wm b 1840, Noah Watson b 1841, Jonathan b 1844, Doctor Early b 1849, Jacob Bentley b 1851, John G Winters b 1853, David Hansford b 1863, and daughters Jane, Sarah, Frances, Samantha, MaryAnn, and Mariah. Andrew Clements, b. c 1780 SC died by 1850 in Russell Co.,AL. His first wife was Nora Mae ( Noomay/Naomi) Payne whom he married Dec. 14, 1805 in Tattnall Co.,GA. In 1850 Catherine Clements, widow of this Andrew is shown as age 53 (b.1796/97). In her house is are her two sons and their wives, William W. Clements, age 25, and Jacob, 18. and their families. The children of Andrew Clements and Naomi Payne are thought to be: William Arthur Clements b Jan.4 1812, GA., m. Elizabeth Crumpton b. AL.Aug.29 1861, MS. James E. Most of these are descendants of Benjamin Clements of Gloucester Co VA, c 1655-1707+ through his son George c 1695-1729 Bertie Co NC, and his grandson Peyton Clements c 1725-1775 and his cousin, Cpt Francis Clements 1660-1717 Surry and Isle of Wight Co VA.
Also included in this group are descendants of Charles Clements and Nancy Jack of Fayette Co. GA.

Benjamin may have been the son of the Richard Clements, or the Thomas Clementswho were in VA a generation earlier. Grissell Coleman was the daughter ofElizabeth Grissell and either Richard or Robert Coleman of early VA. Hewas not the son of Cpt Francis of Isle of Wight Co. This Benjamin and CptFrancis were born about the same time. They both have descendants whose Y DNAmatches. They may have been brothers but more likely cousins. Their DNA doesnot match descendants of either John of Surry Co, or John of Hanover Co VA.

One of the above sons of Benjamin and Grizzell was undoubtedly the father ofPeyton Clements. In 1704 there was a Thomas Peyton living in Gloucester Co. andin 1714 a Robert Peyton was named in a Gloucester Co. record with Benjamin ClementsJr., establishing a geographical proximity between the Clements family ofGrizzell Clements and the Peyton family, as well as a personal relationshipbetween the two families. Since Peyton is believed by descendants to have beenborn c. 1720 - 1725, Benjamin and Grissell's son Thomas is the most likelyprospect for the father of Peyton Clements, who had both a sister and adaughter named Grizzell. Or, his mother might have been a daughter of ThomasPeyton. Peyton Clements' children were:

Philip Peyton was the first member of the Peyton family of England to emigrateto VA. He was probably the progenitor of the early VA Peyton family. Tyree,which may have been the maiden name of Peyton Clements' wife, was not a verycommon name, and was found in those early days in Yorke Co. Va. and New KentCo. Va., from which King Wm was cut out, both bordering on Gloucester Co. Va.The records are burned but the names leave a trail, straight to Gloucester Coand King Wm Co VA and the family of Benjamin Clements and wife Grizzell ColemanClements.
In 1755 in the tithes list of Granville Co NC, Peyton Clements was listed witha Richard Clements who was not assessed a tithe. Richard may have been too old,and he may have been the Richard who was the son of Benjamin and Grissell. Hemay also have been the father of Peyton, or else an uncle.

George Clements was a son of Benjamin of Gloucester. He was not named in theAbingdon Parish register. Most likely reason is that they did not make the tripdown from King Wm to Gloucester for the baptism and had it done at anotherlocal church closer to home. The weather could have been bad or they could havehad a lot of sickness in the house.

If George did marry an ElizabethBlount Swain then he was married to two different Swain ladies before marryingElizabeth Pierce in 1790.
The 1729 will of George Clements of Gloucester Co VA, King Wm Co VA, and BertieCo NC named (very young) children Benjamin, George Jr and Elizabeth. If Georgethe testator was b. c 1694 - 1701, Benjamin and George Jr. were b. c. 1722-8.

We can assume from this document these Clements were related and speculate thatBenjamin, Charles and Culliver and Jesse were brothers. there were many Hardysin both lines of the sons of George of Bertie NC. At least one of theseindividuals has a son named Jesse… [ Culliver ] and the name Jesse was widelyused in the generations following in this line."

The fairy tale that someone invented years ago is the very reason I posted the correct, documented, account of Francis of Isle of Wight. Francis Sr was born in England in 1660. He was 22 years old when he arrived in VA in 1682 as documented in the apprentices records, "Apprentices to America". He was not the son of Jeremiah who had died before 1653 in VA,and who had no male heirs as was proven by the sale of all of his lands by his son in law in 1662. If he had a son the son would have inherited the land.Neither Francis nor John had any of Jeremiah's land. The most recent revised edition of "Adventurers of Purse and Person" has corrected this error which was the source of the fairy tale. Francis Sr died with a will in Isle of Wight Co in 1717/18. He named his son Francis Jr who died in 1721, with a will.Descendants of John of Surry and Francis of Surry/Isle of Wight have submitted to Y DNA testing and they are in two different universes, not even slightly related. You can thank the books "Adventurers of Purse and Person, 1st edition" and "Clements" for the disastrous genealogical error that has been spread like gospel through the Internet. If they had bothered with the VA records such a mistake would never have occurred.

Francis Clements Sr. of Surry Co. Va. was born in England in 1660 and came to America in 1682 as an apprentice. (see "Apprentices to America".) We don't know who his parents were. He married c. 1685 Elizabeth Meriwether Clough, widow, and they had one known son, Francis Jr. who died single person in 1721.

Francis Sr. was not a son of either John Clements of Surry Co. (1631 - c.1710) or of Jeremiah Clements. The latter died without male heirs by 1657 as is proven by the disposition of all his lands by his daughter's husband, Henry Perry. John died by 1710 and named in his will his son John, and his wife Mary's children, Samuel, Ann and Mary Clements, and his grandchildren by his daughters.

Francis Sr. married before 1703 Lydia Laker Bleighton, widow of George Bleighton and probably the daughter of Benjamin Laker. They had children Benjamin, Thomas, Ann Browne, and Elizabeth Dudley. His estate appraisal in Prince George Co. in 1714 was for the purpose of selling off the slave property of Lydia's inheritance as they prepared to move from Surry Co. to Isle of Wight co. where he died in 1718.

Benjamin Jr. (Benjamin Sr., Francis Sr.) married Elizabeth Williamson, daughter of Thomas Williamson, 1-13-1760. They had children Thomas Jr. (12-5-1760), Francis, John, Sarah Williamson, and Elizabeth . Benjamin Jr. lived on land his father left him in Southampton Co. on the Nottoway River. He bought land in Brunswick from his father in law. His will was written in Dec. 1778, two months after his father's.

Thomas Sr. (Benjamin Sr. , Francis Sr..) was probably the one who married Amy MacLain in Lawrenceville in 1772. His will in 1786 names sons Benjamin and William, both under 18. Amy is in the 1787 Dinwiddie tax records and there with Benjamin in 1790, who continued to be in those tax records through 1820. A William Clements married Anne McCulloch there in 1786 but he was not the son of Thomas and Amy, who was only 14 at that time. This William may have been a gr grandson of John of Surry. Some researchers have attributed a son Francis to this Thomas Sr. I did not find a record of him. It is more likely his cousin Thomas b 1744 (Thomas, Francis).

George lived on the Laker plantation he inherrited in Prince George Co. on Wards Creek. Some of George's children were named in the will of Benjamin Sr., George's father.

J. Bishop in July 1958. Many of these Texas Clements lived in Cass and Coryell Counties in Texas. The descendants of Charles Clements and Nancy Jacks have often been confused with the descendants of Charles Clements, son of Gabriel Clements, the Rev. War Soldier of S.C. who lived in SC before moving to Madison Co. GA where he was living in 1820. BUT, these are two distinctly different families with very different DNA markers. A descendant of Jesse C. Clements, son of Charles Clements and Nancy Jack is a member of our DNA Project and his DNA is a match with the Clements of GROUP 8. Gabriel Clements, the Rev. War Soldier of SC and father of Charles Clements of SC and Madison Co. GA ,is a descendant of the Cecil Co. MD Clements which is GROUP 10.

GROUP 9. Not much is known about the ancestors of this group. and they do not know how they connect.
GROUP 10. The common ancestor for this group is Clement Jorransson and his son Anders Clementsson, who were immigrant settlers in New Sweden, Delaware, the fourth major colonial establishment in America, founded in 1636. This was proven many years ago, by a Clements family researcher, C. D ."Charles" Clements of Georgia, was able to trace his known ancestor, Andrew Clements who married Rebecca Brown, to Cecil Co. Maryland and one "Andrew Clements" who had become a naturalized citizen of that state in 1774. One member of this DNA group is a descendant of the same family as C.D. “Charles” Clements.
THE CLEMENTS OF CECIL CO. MD: The Clements family of Cecil Co. MD descends from a Swedish Finn by the name of Clement Joransson who arrived in New Sweden, Delaware in 1641. He was joined by his son, Anders,in 1654. The family surname of "Clements" actually came from Clement Joransson’s given name. The Swedes and Finns did not commonly have surnames.Their children were given a name and then referred to as the son or daughter of "their father's given name". As an example, the son of Clement Joransson, whose given name was Anders, then became "Anders Clementsson". (Had there been a daughter born, she would have been known by her given name, followed by"Clementsdotter".)
Clement JORANASSON was born in 1600 in Sunne Parish, Finland and died unknown. He had one child, a son named Anders. He was one of the earliest settlers in New Sweden, Delaware. His arrival in Colonial America in 1641 was, however, not of his own choosing. His homeland of Sunne Parish, Finland, had become part of Sweden. He was one of the "Finnish farmers who practiced slash and burn agriculture common in Finland, but not popular in Sweden, whose government had deemed the practice to be a crime, calling it burn-beating." Clement was convicted of "burn-beating" by the Swedish government in 1641 and sentenced to "settlement in New Sweden".
Clement was one of twenty-seven people who set sail from Gothenburg, Sweden aboard the Kalmer Nyckel in July, 1641, and arrived at New Sweden on November 7, 1641. Clement’s wife and son were left behind in Sweden.New Sweden records show that Clement is listed as a laborer in the cultivation of tobacco on the Plantation at Upland in 1644. In 1648, he is listed as a “freeman” and had had been given land farther north in some of the “untamed wilderness” of the colony.
In 1654, thirteen years after Clement was forced to leave his wife and son in Sweden, his son, Anders, joined him in New Sweden. Clement Joransson’s son, Anders Clementsson, was born in 1640 in prob.Sunne Parish, Varmland, Sweden. Anders died in Cecil Co. MD on 11 Oct 1687.
Anders Clementson (aka Andrew Clements) arrived in New Sweden in Colonial America in May 1654 on board the ship, "The Orne (Eagle)" to join his father. The ship had sailed from Gothenborg, Sweden in February 1654. Upon his arrival in New Sweden, he served as a soldier at Fort Christina. In 1655, New Sweden was captured by the Dutch and some of the Swedish Finns left the colony and moved to Maryland, including Andrew, his wife, and two sons, Clement and Andrew. Andrew was granted "denization" by the government of Maryland on July 29, 1661. A 400 acre tract of land on the south side of the Elk River was surveyed for "Andrew Clemerson" on July 29, 1662.Andrew's plantation, called "Clementson" was located in Cecil Co. MD. He became a naturalized citizen in Maryland on June 6, 1674. On his naturalization papers, he was described as a Swede, formerly of New Amstel, Delaware.
Anders first married UNKNOWN. They had the following children: i.Clement (~1660-~1704) ii. Andrew (1662-~1704) iii. Cornelius (~1664-1714). Anders second married Ingeborg Unknown and they had the following children: iv. John (~1667-1709) v. Henry (~1672-1709) vi. Michael (1680-~1726) vii. Jacob (~1674-1709) viii. Matthias (1682-1709).
Ander's will was written July 30, 1685 and proven October 11, 1687 in Cecil Co. MD. Descendants of Anders Clementsson continued to live in Cecil Co. MD for many years after his death,but by 1750 there were no families living in Cecil Co. MD who carried the Clements surname. There were a few descendants of Andrew Clements still living there at that time, but they were all female descendants.
At the present time, the only male descendants who carry the Clements surname (or some variant spelling of the name) from the Anders Clementsson line of Cecil Co. MD are probably descendants of three brothers, Andrew, Joseph, and Cornelius Clements, sons of Gabriel Clements (proven grandson of Anders Clementsson) and Sarah Brown who were residents of Cecil Co. MD in the very early 1700's and their five children are listed in the birth register of St. Stephens Parish. Gabriel died leaving four sons (Andrew,Joseph, Isaac, and Cornelius) and a daughter (Sarah), all minors. At the present time no information has been found on two of the children (Isaac and Sarah), but a great deal of information as been found on three of the sons (Andrew, Joseph, and Cornelius).
Apparently, Andrew, Joseph and their brother, Cornelius decided to leave their native Cecil Co. MD in the company of Andrew's father-in-law,Edward Brown, and join the large group of Americans who were venturing south into Virginia and further into North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.Colonial records of Georgia and South Carolina have placed Andrew, Joseph, and Cornelius in those states dating from 1749.
Two members in this y-DNA test group are proven descendants of Gabriel Clements, son of Andrew Clements and Rebecca Brown. A solid paper trail of evidence establishes this Gabriel Clements as a descendant of Clement Joransson and Anders Clementsson. Since all of the the other members of this group have matching DNA with these two members, this establishes the ancestral family line of the rest of the group also to be descendant of Clement Joransson and Anders Clementsson. This Gabriel Clements was married to Nancy "Unknown". He is the Gabriel Clements who inherited land near Orangeburg Co. SC from his grandfather, Edward Brown, the father of Rebecca Brown. Everyone else in this group are a perfect DNA match with these two Clements.
A descendant of Clement Jorransson and Andrew Clementsson found documented evidence that proved that her known ancestor,Cornelius Clements of Rutherford Co. NC, who married Susannah Goforth, was the son of Joseph Clements, brother of Andrew Clements who married Rebecca Brown. Her application, along with the documented evidence, was accepted by the Swedish Colonial Society, a group that allows into its membership ONLY proven descendants of immigrants who settled New Sweden. One member of our DNA group is a proven descendant of Andrew Clements of Rutherford Co. NC, a brother of Cornelius Clements.
Two members are proven descendants of Gabriel Clements and Mary Watts.
Researchers for years identified Gabriel Clements, husband of Nancy Unknown and Gabriel Clements, husband of Mary Watts, to be the same person. However, recent research points to the fact that they are two different persons - definitely related, but from different families.
Four members of our group are proven descendants of Clement Clements, a Revolutionary War soldier, whose war records prove that he is a brother of Gabriel Clements who married Mary Watts. One member who is a descendant of Mathew Clements and Jealles Douglas does not appear to be a match with this group according to his haplogroup and his DNA numbers; however,it is a proven fact that this Mathew Clements is a son of Clement Clements ,Revolutionary War Soldier, and the fact that this member does not match with the rest of the group has to be the result of some extraordinary event such as an adoption, an illegitimate birth, or a child of a much loved neighbor who was left homeless and taken in my a Clements family and raised by the Clements name.
One member is a descendant of Cornelius Clements of Darlington Co. SC who married Mary Register. One member is a descendant of Joshua Clements, also of Darlington Co. SC. It is believed that Cornelius and Joshua are probably brothers. One member is a descendant of James West Clements also of Darlington Co. SC. One member is a descendant of Arthur Allen of Darlington Co. SC, but his DNA is a perfect 67/67 DNA match with these other Darlington Co. Clements and it is not known if he was adopted or some other event makes him a Clements descendant.
The test results of One member whose test was done by another lab (not the Family Tree y-DNA lab used by the rest of the group) were sent to us by that lab because his results were a 12/12 match with this group so his name and test numbers do not show up on our chart. However,he is still a member of this DNA group. He is a proven descendant of Joseph Everett Clements, believed to be the son of Jacob Clements and Sarah Beasley of Emanuel and Laurens Counties in GA. This family relationship is yet to be proven, but records of this family strongly suggest this to be true. The research on this family also strongly suggests that Jacob was probably a brother of Joseph Clements of Laurens Co. GA who married 1st Elizabeth Register and 2nd Elizabeth “Betsy” Mims. One member of our group is a descendant of Joseph Clements and Elizabeth “Betsy” Mims. Records of Jacob Clements and Joseph Clements, also not yet proven, strongly suggest that they are closely related to Cornelius Clements of Darlington Co. SC and to Joseph Clements, progenitor of the very large Clements family of Irwin Co. GA.
Several members of this group have ancestors who are found in Tuscaloosa Co.AL and Walker Co. AL in the early 1800's. Two members are descendants of Gabriel Clements, born 1796 in SC, One member is a descendant of Joseph Clements, born 1803 in TN, and Three members are descendants of Jacob Clements, born 1809 in TN who married Luanna Busby. Gabriel, Joseph and Jacob are the sons of Thomas Brenard Clements and Mary Evans. No census record for Thomas for 1800 has been found, but records show that he was living in Tennessee in 1800 which does not have a census record for that year. He then went to Kentucky for a brief time where he is listed on the 1810 Hardin Co. KY Census, then went back to Tennessee where he lived from 1810 to just after 1820 when he moved to Tuscaloosa Co. AL. There are ten families of Clements listed on the 1830 Tuscaloosa Co. AL Census, all of whom are listed with the spelling of "Clemmonds". Thomas Brenard is listed as T.Clemmonds and his age is 60-70 years. He is listed as Thomas Clemmons on the 1840 Tuscaloosa Co. AL Census as 70-80 years old. Recent research has proven that Thomas Clements’ wife was Mary Evans, daughter of Robert Evans who died in Perry Co.AL in the 1830's and listed in his will is his daughter Mary and her husband,Thomas Clements. His sons, Jacob, Joseph, Andrew, Gabriel, Thomas Jr.,and William are also listed on that 1840 Census. In 1850, Thomas Sr. had died,but his sons Gabriel, Thomas, and Andrew are still on the Tuscaloosa Co.AL Census, Jacob is in the next county (Walker) and Joseph and William had moved to Mississippi and are listed on the Panola Co. MS Census.
Two members are descendants of Jacob Clements and Frances Sims who were also residents of Tuscaloosa Co. AL in the early 1800's. It is a known fact that Jacob was in Green Co. KY in 1805. It is also known that Jacob went to TN after leaving Green Co. KY so he was also in the same area as Thomas Brenard Clements at the same time and both of these families then moved on to Tuscaloosa Co. AL. We have proof tha tall of the Tuscaloosa Co. AL Clements of the early 1800's were all descendants of the Cecil Co. MD Clements except for one family who are descendants of Reubin Clements who belongs to another Clements line.
Three members are descendants of William W.Clements, born 2 Nov 1802 in Hardin Co. KY, son of Mannan Clements and wife, Margaret Evans; two of them are not a DNA match with the group as they were children of an unmarried daughter of William W. Recent research has proven that Mannan’s wife, Margaret, was Margaret Evans, daughter of Robert Evans (and a sister of Mary Evans who married Thomas Brenard Clements). Listed in the will of Robert Evans of Perry Co. AL is his daughter, Margaret Clements. Mannan Clements is listed on the 1805 Green Co. KY tax list next to the name of Jacob Clements (who married Frances Sims). Mannan died in Bedford Co. TN in 1810,proven by Bible records in the possession of his descendants. William married Ann Thacker and is listed on the 1850 and 1860 Walker Co. AL Census records living near the family of Jacob Clements. He died in 1863 in Bedford Co. TN.
One member is a descendant of EmanuelClements who was born 20 May 1813 in KY, son of William Clements, born about 1770, and his wife Unknown Polk. William is listed on the 1810 Hardin Co.KY Census, and the 1820 and 1830 Hart Co. KY Census records. He purchased land in Wayne Co. TN about 1829 and moved his family there where he died in 1839. Probate records in that county provide the names of his children and some of their spouses. Descendants of this family were among the earliest settlers inTexas soon after its Independence from Mexico.
Three members are descendants of Andrew Clement who married Sarah Skaggs in 1793 in Green Co. KY. One member's ancestor is Mannan Clements, eldest child of Andrew and Sarah,and the ancestor of two members is William Wesley Clement, the youngest son of Andrew and Sarah. Early research on Andrew Clement is problematic as it was done initially by researchers of the Skaggs family which centered more on the Skaggs and less on the families of the spouses. That research says that Andrew Clement was born 19 April 1769 in NC. A descendant of Andrew and Sarah who was a contributor to the Skaggs Family Research stated that Andrew's parents were James Clement, born in Amherst Co. VA, a descendant of the Clements of Amelia Co. VA, and his wife Catherine. This was actually a "theory" based on the known fact that this James Clement actually came to Barren Co. KY about 1800 (where Andrew was also living in 1800) and died there leaving a widow, his second wife, and some minor children . James' brother, Vachel Clement, then came to Barren Co. KY and helped settle the estate of his deceased brother. DNA test results of these three members, proven descendants of Andrew and Sarah,PROVE that this James is not the father of Andrew. The discovery that Jacob Clements and Mannan Clements were in Green Co. KY in 1805, and Thomas Brenard Clements and William Clements were in nearby Hardin Co KY, places them in the same county and nearby county as Andrew Clement during the same time frame. It is believed that Jacob, Mannan, Thomas Brenard, William and Andrew Clements are brothers, sons of Abraham Clements, son of Joseph of Cecil Co. MD.
One member is a descendant of Richard William Oxnam Clements who was born in England in1823. How he fits into the Anders Clementson family is quite a mystery that is still being researched.
One member who is a descendant of Noble Clements does not appear to be a match with this group according to his haplogroup and his DNA numbers; however, there is strong evidence that the mother of Noble Clements is probably Eleanor Clements who was listed on the 1820 Madison Co. GA Census living next to Charles Clements, and that she is most probably a sister of Charles Clements, son of Gabriel Clements and Nancy Unknown. There is documented evidence that shows that there was a strong family bond between Noble Clements and the two daughters (Mary Jane and Harriet) of Charles Clements. Benjamin Witcher and Mary Jane Clements and their children were living two households away from Noble on the 1840 Census. Also, Noble Clements witnessed the will of James Graham, husband of Harriet Clements. This person is a match with a person whose surname is Jenkins. An interesting bitof information is that there were two households in 1820 Madison Co. GA with the surname of Jenkins. The fact that this member does not match with the rest of the group has to be the result of some extraordinary event such as an adoption, an illegitimate birth, or a child of a much loved neighbor who was left homeless and taken in my a Clements family and raised by the Clements name.

GROUP 12. These participants all match proven descendants of the family of John Clements of King William / Hanover Co. VA 1655-1749, through his sons William, Stephen, and Simon. His son John, who seemingly settled in Petersburg VA, now has a matching representation in the DNA project results.
The documented sons were William (of Amelia Co VA), John b 1687 no further record, Stephen of Goochland Co VA, and Simon of Granville Co NC. Based on all the extant records and the corresponding dates, as well as DNA matching,

John and Stephen were deceased in 1747 at the writing of the will. Gen. II William, John, Stephen and Simon; WILLIAM Clement born c 1680-1681 migrated from King Wm Co VA to Amelia Co in 1735, at c age 55; d Amelia Co 1760. wife Anne (probably Parker) Children; Benjamin born c 1703, William Jr born c 1707, John born c 1710 and Francis born c 1720; daus Eliz, Barsheba and Ann. (more on these 4 sons of William will follow on Gen III) JOHN JR 1687-c1746 wife Mary probable sons John b c 1708, William b c 1710, Reuben and David.
There are two participants who match the other descendants of John of Hanover whose ancestor seems to have been John Jr, son of John of King Wm /Hanover Co and wife Elizabeth (Terry?), b Abingdon Parish 1687. They are the descendant of John Clements who died in King Wm Co in 1767, and the descendant of David Clements b c 1740, who migrated from Petersburg VA to GA c 1792. John died testate, as a young man in 1767, with a young son Wm Martin Clements who became the father of Young I Clements b King Wm Co c 1798. We are still working on how he connects exactly to John Jr.
The other participant who undoubtedly descends from John Jr is David, who may have been the youngest son of John Jr. and Mary. David Clements, b c 1730-1745. He lived in Petersburg, and died in GA in 1805 and his descendants have a family history written by one of his grandsons as well as a well researched genealogy of the family. His unknown wife died c 1790 and he migrated to GA c 1793. He is in the Dinwiddie tax records from 1787 - 1792. In 1791 he received a land grant in Greensville Co VA which he sold in 1792 to Eppes Squire. In 1790 he was appointed administrator of the estate of Reuben Clements, dec. In 1793 he migrated to GA with his family, sons JOHN b 1768, STEPHEN b 1772, and DAVID b 1778. A grgrgrandson of son Stephen is a DNA participant. Most of the men in this family are MDs. A William Francis Clements /Clemmons migrated to Breathitt Co KY. Descendants there have a family tradition that he had been born in Pittsylvania Co VA and migrated to western VA and on to KY. His first son was named Benjamin, possibly after his uncle in Pittsylvania Co VA who probably raised the small children after their father died in 1764.

There is much incorrect data and guestimations at dates on the Internet. This record is the work of several descendants and is based on records and not false guesswork. Intense work went into this record, and it is as close to accurate as we can get. My dates differ from other researchers. I have found that too many speculated dates have been based on pure guesswork and not on the data available. I started with the 1680-83 birth year for William of Amelia based on the fact that when he migrated to Amelia Co from King William Co in 1735 he was not more than 55 years old. I do not believe that a 65 year old man, in 1735, was migrating into virgin wilderness. Most 65 year old men in 1735 were either writing their wills or already dead. I have worked from the known dates to estimate the approximate dates. Dates that are approximate are preceded by the traditional genealogical symbol for "about", which is "c", the symbol for circa which is Latin for about. The outdated misinformation about William of Amelia was the work of a descendant about 75-100 years ago. Her date of Wm's birth was speculated several generations ago by the assumption that he was the son Benjamin of Gloucester and ignorance of the fact that he was the son of John of Hanover. Her record was based on a very scanty search and the lack of DNA testing at the time. We have searched all of the VA records and there is no other William who could have been the son named in John of Hanover's will. That and the fact that William was in Amelia Co with his youngest brother Simon is strongly conclusive. DNA testing of descendants confirms it. Even prior to DNA testing, the evidence showing that William was not the son of Benjamin of Gloucester is found in the Abingdon Parish records which name the children of Benjamin; sons were Richard, Benjamin, Thomas and George (in another record). No William.
This has been an intense, on location, 5 year search based on a comprehensive search of all of the Clements lines in early VA, substantiated by DNA findings. William was the son of John and he was born c 1680, not 1670. Based on all the extant records and the corresponding dates, William Clement of Amelia Co VA was the son of John of Hanover, b c 1680- 1683, and died 1760. William Francis Clemmons may be the son of Francis Clements who d. Amelia Co. VA 1764, son of William of Amelia d. 1760. Test #27745, he has one mutation on the 3rd marker, and is an 11/12 match to the rest of the group. Another descendant of William Francis Clemmons is a 12/12 match for 27745, and an 24/25 match for the main group. They have a family legend of relationship to the Amelia / Pittsylvania Co Clements. Participant 19607 has two mutations on the 10th and 11th markers but he is a proven paper trail member of this group. Test # 38975. David Clements b. c.1745 VA, migrated from Petersburg VA to GA c.1792. He was probably the grandson of John, the missing son of John of Hanover Co VA c. 1660-1749, who seemed to have settled in Petersburg VA leaving a large family of related Clements in the area. Test # 10868 This participant is descended from William III, the son of William Jr, son of Wm Sr of Amelia Co VA, c1680-1760, son of John of Hanover Co VA. Wm III was in Bedford Co. VA in 1776 with his wife's family and in 1777 he sold the land that he had inherited by the will of his father Wm c 1707-1765. His son Benjamin and grandson Samuel Gilbert Clements were, and descendants are in Greensville Co. VA. William of Amelia Co who died 1760 was probably born c. 1680, not 1670, the first son of John of King Wm and Hanover Co VA. John b. 1687 (Abingdon Parish records) who was deceased before 1748, was a son of John of Hanover; widow Mary. Stephen of Goochland, 1692-1746 was a son of John of Hanover Simon Clement was the youngest son of John of Hanover I repeat, our dates differ from other researchers.

GROUP 13. The common ancestor of three of these members is Henry Clements b 1821 Ireland, who settled in Iowa and died there in 1905. He was a 19th Century immigrant from Ireland and some participants in Ireland are the goal to determine their earlier connections. The ancestor of one member is unknown as he was adopted.
GROUP 14. This branch of the Clemens/Clements family can be traced to Jacob Clements I, born in Germany about 1709. The following is the ancestral line for both of the participants with the following exception: [86996] branches of from in the 4th generation from George Washington Clements 1841-1906.
Generation 1: Jacob Clements (I) (1709 - ? ) Jacob I arrived in New York in about 1766 with two brothers (possibly Matthew and Phillip) and at least one son, Jacob II. Wife may have been Margarethe (Unknown). His spouse was probably deceased since no mention of her can be found in New York.
FROM: The History Of Herkimer County p.397 While in Wurtemberg, Germany on a visit, Peter Hasenclever pictured to the German peasants the wonders of the new world in such glowing colors that a number of them consented to emigrate. Hasenclever provided them with means for their passage to his settlement, and agreed to supply them and their families with subsistence for three years in return for their service. He built an ashery, probably the first frame building, and the first manufactory of any kind within the present bounds of Schuyler. .......Potash and other products were shipped by Hasenclever down the Mohawk in flat boats, and merchandise and provisions returned in the same manner. He also began to build a saw-mill on a small stream flowing into the Mohawk. This settlement he named "New Petersburg." Over thirty log houses were built for the people employed by Hasenclever, among whom were families named, Bridenbecker, Staring, Bargy, CLEMENS, Widrig, Oyer, Finster, Keller, Steinway and others. The Revolutionary War was the cause of the destruction and abandonment of New Petersburg. The business of the ashery and the trading were broken up and Hasenclever left the country for good. The ashery stood on land now owned by Luther P. Staring.

Jacob II left Germany with his family when he was 6 years old (1766). He fought with his father in the Battle of Oriskany in 1777 against British forces under St. Ledger. Their names are on the Battle Monument in Oriskany. He served in the 4th Regiment (Bellinger's) of the Tryon County Militia, German Flatts, Western District at Oriskany. Jacob is listed by the DAR as Jacob Clements who served as a private from New York. He did receive a pension of $80 per year. He enlisted March 12, 1777 and was discharged on March 12, 1780. Jacob fought at the Battle of Oriskany and went with the troops that followed Butler in his retreat through the northern part of Herkimer Co. when Butler was killed at "Butler's Ford" in the town of Ohio, Herkimer Co., NY.
Jacob apparently was married twice, according to Phyllis Smith Oyer's book, Oyer and Allied Families Supplement 1, Rochester, NY, 1994. In this book, it says that Jacob and his first wife, Eva Catharine Keller married in 1781 and had 3 children: Johann Jacob (note: this is Jacob III), Appollonia, and Margaretha (Margaret). It then says that Jacob married Eva Catharine Steinwax on July 25, 1786. Their children were: Michael, Johannes, Daniel, George, Mary and Peter.
