The Desmond DNA Project will attempt to determine thru Y-DNA analysis which of the DESMOND surname origins are true:
1) If there is merely a normal percentage of Y-DNA matches across unrelated Desmonds, it would put some weight behind the "sept" theory.
2) If there is a much larger than normal percentage of Y-DNA matches across unrelated Desmonds, it would lend validity to the "Earls" theory.
3) If there are any widespread Y-DNA matches to another Irish surname, it would give some credence to the "sub-clan" theory.
A secondary goal of the Desmond DNA Project will be to see how (or if) Desmonds whose ancestors are from Continental countries such as Italy, France or Germany are genetically related to the Irish Desmond families.
Lastly, a genealogical goal of the Desmond DNA project will be to identify previously unknown links between modern-day Desmond families, and to possibly pinpoint the ancestral towns or parishes of those families in Ireland.
