E-M44 (originally known as E1a1) is below E-M96. The tree to M44 is E-M96> P147> M132> Z965> M44 Membership requirements: Males who are YDNA tested and who wish to explore their origins. Typically they will show STR markers DYS391=9 and/or DYS392=12. You must test for haplogroup at FTDNA with a resulting E-M44 or downstream result. Far more useful is to do a Big Y test.
