About us
The Eastern Shore of Virginia (Accomack and Northampton counties) was first explored by Captain John Smith of Jamestown. In 1608 he crossed the Chesapeake
Bay with a crew of men and landed at Cape Charles. By 1616 there were two settlements on the Eastern Shore. One was at Cape Charles and another was at
Dale's Gift where Lieutenant Craddock and seventeen men were stationed. The purpose of these settlements was to boil the sea water down to salt and catch
fish for the settlers living on the James River. The first permanent white settler on the Eastern Shore was Ensign Thomas Savage. He had arrived at Jamestown with
Captain Smith in 1607 and by 1619 Savage was living among the Native Americans. Beginning with Thomas Savage the population of the Eastern Shore began to grow and
by the end of the seventeenth century, the Eastern Shore was firmly established.
