This project uses Y-dna to identify the many Ellis lines around the world, and to help the participants connect with cousins. There are many variations in the name: Alce, Ales, Alis, Allace, Alles, Alless, Allis, Alliss, Eles, Elice, Elis, Elles, Ellice, Ellis, Els, Elys . . . all are welcome to join. All participants of the National Geographic Genographic DNA Project who are descended on a direct paternal Ellis line are welcome to join.

The project uses FamilyTreeDNA as our testing lab. While it is possible to join with results from other companies, it makes the interpretation of results much more difficult. The minimun number of markers neccessary for this project is 37.
