About us

Results:

The 37 marker results for the first participant 248013 made available in September 2012 show the haplogroup R1b2 and the 67 marker results will be available in October, 2012. FamilyFinder results will also be available to this participant and one other. That will mean that there will be 7 participants who have known Hartnett ancestors who have FamilyFinder results.

It is to be hoped that many Hartnett/Harnett men will follow participant 248013 into the project, so please join in the research programme and also spread the word.

November 2012

We now have three members with yDNA tester at the 37 marker level and the results should appear on the spreadsheet by the end of December.

We also have encouraging results coming in from the FFT but too few participants to  draw conclusions other than to say that we should be seeing links between Abbeyfeale, Dromtrasna and Newcastlewest. Preliminary indicators are that the Harnett family are from the haplogroup R1b1a2.

January 2013

The results obtained to date indicate that:

a) the Harnett/Hartnett men shared a common ancestor as recently as 200-300 years ago.

b) they are members of the South Irish Eoghanacht tribe.

c) they are not Viking as had been suggested by one theory. To suggest that they are descendants of King Canute would require him to have been R1b1a2 and we have no proof of that. We do, however, have very strong eveidence so far that the Harnetts share an ancient a common ancestor with the Moriarty and O Mahony and other Eoghanacht septs.

Further results which were anticipated in February 2013 showed a degree of consistency with the existing participants.
