This project was established to reconstruct the early families on Hatteras Island in order to help people find and better understand their female ancestors. Many families have oral histories of their female ancestors being Native American and this reconstruction project should be able to confirm or dispel that myth. If your maternal line ancestors (those through whom your mitochondrial dna descends) were not from Hatteras or Ocracoke Islands or elsewhere on the outer banks, you do not qualify for this project. Perhaps the Hatteras Fathers or Hatteras Family Finder projects are better suited to your needs.
