GROUP #6

This group has branches which match through DNA, but that we have not been able to connect genealogically. This Hawkins group is English and indications are they all probably originated in southwestern England, from Plymouth to Portsmouth in the counties of Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, and Devon (the foremost in Portsea, Hampshire). The Privateer Sir John Hawkins line came from the Plymouth area. Many people claim to be descendants of the same tree. Some ancestry of people in this group believe it is possible they are...but we are a LONG way from proving it.

What we have are three matching tests which claim possible ancestry back to Sir John's great-grandson John Hawkins (b. 1643) and his wife Mary Dewe. Two tests are from proposed descendants of their son John Hawkins (1680-1740) and his wife Mary Long. One contributor claims descent through their son Philemon (1690-1725) and his wife Ann Howard. The first two tests are from descendants of Elijah Hawkins (c1774) and his wife Elizabeth Scott's son Henry (via Henry's sons William and Nelson). Elijah is believed to be the son of Nicholas Hawkins (1754) and Elizabeth Jones, but there is no proof as of yet. Nicholas is the grandson of Nicholas (c1700-1754), the brother of Philemon.

The other fly in the ointment is that there is another test in Group 9 which claims to be a descendant of Philemon Hawkins, and that test does not match the test from this group. This quandry needs to be resolved.

The branches (that all match) are:

  • Stephen Hawkins was a “mariner” who was born in coastal NH in the late 1600s & died May 7, 1720 in Dover, NH. This line moved westward through Vermont, New York, Iowa and ultimately to Michigan and some onto Washington state. New Hampshire was named and settled initially by immigrants from the Hampshire, Southampton area of England. Stephen has a son Stephen (b. 1718) who had a son name William (b. 1757) and another John (1745-1820). William homesteaded in VT in the 1790's. William's youngest child was Luther (b. 1805 Caledonia Co, VT). Luther Hawkins (d. c1883 Tuscola Co, MI) is believe to be this Luther (son of William). He appears in the Niagara Falls NY in the 1840 censusand migrated to Michigan from New York just after the Civil War (1867 or so).

Grandson John's descendants stayed in New Hampshire, before moving west to Iowa and then Washington state. There are two samples in the project from this branch. One is from a descendant of Stephen's grandson John and the other is from a descendant of Stephen's grandson William.

  • George Hawkins (1809-1894) was born in Portsea, Hampshire, Southampton, England, as was his son George, his grandson George and his great-grandson Ernest were. Ernest He immigrated to New York on Nov 19, 1910, when he was 22 on the ship Saint Louis. He said he had a contact named Mrs. Hawkins in the US. Ernest went onto Michigan where he died in 1972.

  • Martin Hawkins (1837-1893)was born in Southampton, England and ultimately immigrated through New York City, NY to Illinois. Family legend has it that Martin Hawkins fell in love with an Irish girl named Hannah Sheehan. Martin's family would not approve the marriage and Martin gave her passage money to New York. He was in the English navy and was on a ship bound for New York. He jumped ship in New York and met up with Hannah and were wed. They came west headed for California but got as far Illinois when their first baby was born.  Martin's parents were Elias Hawkins (c1786-1857) and Eliza Blanchard (1800-1857)

  • William Hawkins (b. c1868) was born in Kentisbeare, Devonshire, England).  His wife's initials were M.R. (that is all I know) and was born about 1879 in Tiverton, Devonshire, England.  They had three children (R.W b. c1903; Sidney b. 1903, d. 1989, m. Dorothy Rice; and B.C Hawkins b. c1905.

  • James Hawkins (b 1841) m. Fanny Clark. Their child Alfred John Hawkins (b 1864 London, England; d. 1902 Kent County, England); m June 30, 1885 Mary Ann Jameson in England) immigrated to Gibson City, IL in the US. Both became naturalized citizens on November 5th, 1892. They had five children in Gibson City: Ethel, Albert, Reuben (Vincent), Marian, and William. In 1896, Mary Ann , Ethel, Marian, and William returned to England. In 1897, Alfred, Albert, and Reuben returned to England. Back in England, Alfred worked as a house painter and he and Mary Ann had four more children: Gladys, Grace, Herbert, and Alfred Jr. Alfred Sr died of smallpox on March 31 1902. Sons William and Alfred Jr immigrated to Pasadena California and in 1915 sponsored their sister Gladys who also immigrated to California.

Their son Reuben Vincent “Vic” Hawkins was born in Gibson City, IL, but moved to Great Britain during the first World War and joined the Royal Navy, and then after the war settled in Canada (in Toronto, Ontario). His grandchildren currently live in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and Ontario, in small towns outside of Toronto. It's not clear when, and to where, Alfred and Mary Ann's other children emigrated (or whether they remained in England). Mary Ann spent her last years with her children in California and died in Los Angeles California on December 15 1947.

  • David Hawkins (1865-1911) married Martha “Mattie” Cates (1875-1971) David was born in Limestone County, Texas, supposedly to Pinkney (1833-1915) and Mary Turner (1841-1897). There is another test in Group 9 that claims to descend from Pinkney and Mary's son Pinkney (1875-1969). That test and this one do not match. Pinkney Sr. is reportedly great-great-grandson of Philemon (1690-1725) and Ann Howard (1695-1742) a great-great-great-grandson of Sir John Hawkins.

Philemon was born in Slapton, England, just east of Plymouth and immigrated to Virginia where he married and died. At some point his son Philemon II or grandson John moved to South Carolina where John's son Benjamin was born. Benjamin moved to Georgia where his son Pinkney was born. Pinkney moved to Limestone County, Texas where his children (including David and Pinkney) and grandchildren were born.

  • Elijah Hawkins (bef 1774-1840) married to Elizabeth Scott (1782-1842) the daughter of Reuben Scott and Margaret Cope. He is buried in the Benjamin L. Perry Cemetery in Salt Rock, West Virginia. Some of his children (traveled west and settled in Monroe County, Indiana. Elijah is believed to be the son of Nicholas Hawkins (c1700-1754) and Elizabeth Long (c1704-1768) who is a descendant of Sir John Hawkins. This needs to be proven.

  • Gyles Glummer (b. 1640) was born in Chard, Somerset, England (Southwest England between Portsmouth and Plymouth, just north of the Dorset, Weymoth area). All generations of this sample's ancestry were born and lived in Somerset. What the Hawkins connection is has not been determined, yet. The Glummers lived in the same general area where the Hawkins from this group lived.

At this point we need help to do the following:

  • We need a fully proven descendant of Sir John Hawkins tested.

  • We need a sample from a documented descendant of Nicholas (c1700-1754) and Elizabeth Long

  • We have two samples from descendants of Elijah's son Henry. We need to find a sample from another one of his sons, either John N. (b1809 & married Lucinda Holmes) or William (b. 1811 & married America Beleu). William had a son named George Eldridge Hawkins.

  • We need a DNA sample from another son of James (b. 1841) or his son Alfred tested and more ancestry researched on James's parents, children, and siblings.

  • We need to find the marriage license of Martin and Hannah, which might have their parent's names listed and the birthplace. If the death certificate and/or obit of the first one of them to die are found, they also may have parent information and/or birthplace information on them.

  • We need more genealogy information for the William Hawkins branch (b. c1868)

  • We need a test from another descendant of Philemon Hawkins (1690-1725).

  • We need more legwork to find more information about Stephen Hawkins (1685-1720)...where he was born, who his parents were, ancestry on his half brother John, etc.

  • We need another test from the George Hawkins (c1809) line, preferably from a descendant of his son Robert.

  • We need more research to find more children for Gyles Glummer to get a descendant of another son to submit a test.
