This is both a regional and a surname Y DNA project. The goal of this project is to determine the Y DNA markers of all of the major families of the Jewish Judengasse. There are at more than 20 families whose family tree can be traced back AT LEAST to the 16th Century. It is likely that these families are also related to many of the families of Hesse and even Eastern Europe. As most Jews hit a brick wall in the 18th-19th Century, a match with any of these families will help Jews connect to ancestors born 200-300 years earlier than their oldest known ancestor.

This project is a Y DNA ONLY project and we are looking primarily for those of Jewish ancestry who have a DOCUMENTED lineage back to AT LEAST the 16th Century in the Worms/Mainz/Frankfurt area. We are also looking for members who have one of the surnames adopted in the Frankfurt area AND ties along their direct male line to Germany or Alsace. In certain circumstances I MIGHT consider adding someone from Eastern Europe only if they also have a very deep paper trail and a Y DNA match to one of our members.
