About us
The Maybury DNA Project aims:
1. to find out if most Mayburys, Mayberrys, Mabrys, etc. descend from a common ancestor;
2. to look for markers that might help us identify major branches of the family;
3. to look for answers to questions that conventional genealogical research cannot answer.
The Project’s goal of finding the common ancestor, not only of the descendants of several early immigrants to America named Maybury, Mayberry, Mabry, etc., but of many Mayburys in several counties, was achieved with the identification of John Maybury of Sussex.
The Project’s second goal has proved to be more difficult to achieve. Although we may have found distinguishing STR markers for Mayberrys whose ancestors lived in County Londonderry, Ireland, beginning about 1657, and for some descendants of Francis Maybury who arrived in Virginia in the 1670s, SNP testing through BigY appears to offer the best hope in distinguishing between various branches of the family.
