About us

The McKercher/McKerracher families and all the spelling variants are indexed here: https://www.mckercher.org

There are 4 main source areas for the families:

  1. Glenlyon-Fortingall
  2. Loch Tay-Kenmore-Killin
  3. Grandtully-Logierait
  4. Aberfoyle-Buchanan-Port of Menteith

There are unconnected branches in Strathearn, Stirlingshire, Lanarkshire and elsewhere that likely descend from the above groups.

The Aberfoyle-Buchanan-Port of Menteith families aliased as McFarlane, and it is unclear exactly how they are related. Some later families here originated from Glenlyon-Fortingall and Loch Tay-Kenmore-Killin.
The Grandtully-Logierait families finalized their names as either McKercher or more frequently as Farquharson. This may be due to that area being more Anglicized than their neighbouring families to the west. They are showing relations to the families of Glenlyon-Fortingall and Loch Tay-Kenmore-Killin with autosomal DNA tests, so are highly likely of the same descent.
The Glenlyon-Fortingall and Loch Tay-Kenmore-Killin families intermarried extensively.
