About us

24 May 2018.

The McNamara surname DNA project now has 46 members with STR results, of whom 25 are McNamaras, 2 are MacNamaras, 1 is a Macnamara and 1 is a Mack.  The other 17 are from non-McNamara male lines.

None of these men has yet given the new administrator Limited Access to their results.  This new requirement is essential to allow project members to be assigned to the most appropriate subgroup.

I have provisionally divided these members into 11 McNamara subgroups, based mainly on their predicted or confirmed haplogroups (terminal SNPs), with a residual group for the non-McNamaras (generally men whose McNamara ancestry is not through the patrilineal line).

Some project members with non-McNamara surnames may have joined the project because they are genetically close to McNamaras, but this is not yet visible to the new administrator. In some of these cases, the common ancestor may pre-date the adoption of surnames; in other cases, there may have been a subsequent surname/DNA switch.

The first confirmed terminal SNPs for men in the McNamara subgroups are I-Y6908, R-P25, R-YP5317, R-FGC35787, R-DC30, R-DC189, R-DC340 and R-FGC5628.  The latter four are descendants of the better-known R-L226, also known as the Irish Type III or Dalcassian Y-DNA signature, which accounts for over one third of the McNamara men in the project (10 out of 29).

The Big Tree shows five SNPs which are almost certainly specific to the McNamara surname: DC189, DC191, DC340, DC320 and DC325.

So far, only six of the men whose surname is McNamara or a variant have given a placename in the Paternal Ancestor Name column, all in Ireland (four in County Clare and one each in Counties Limerick and Mayo).

The terminal SNPs identified for most of the McNamara lineages are all in the high level haplogroup R1b.  There are two exceptions, individuals who belong to haplogroups I and R1a.
