To identify the DNA in the various "pockets" in Scotland and to use these as the "yard-stick", so that we have something to compare Oliphants with, in the United States, Canada, Australia and in other parts of Scotland (such as the big cities), where there have been so many different Oliphants arriving, that it is hard to tell them apart or to trace their ancestry.

If we can identify the DNAs of the various "pockets" in Scotland and the north of England, this will narrow the search for the others, as we should be able to identify the group of Oliphants from which they emanate.

In addition, it is hoped, since the family trees of all the "landed" branches of the family are known, to be able to calculate which branch people are from.
