About us
The Participants in the Prosser DNA Project are currently divided into sixteen distinct and unrelated groups.
Notes:
(1) Haplogroups shown in green font were confirmed by Y-DNA SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) testing at the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) laboratory. Haplogroups shown in red font are predicted by Family Tree DNA based on the Y-DNA STR (Short Tandem Repeat) values of a participant who has not done in-depth Y-DNA SNP testing.
(2) The names of the participants in the Prosser DNA Project are withheld per FTDNA privacy rules. However, their respective Kit Numbers are shown in red font.
Group 01: Descendants of Daniel Prosser (1744-1829) & Richard Prosser (1748-1795)
This Group began as two separate and distinct groups. (1) The Descendants of Daniel Prosser (1744-1829) of Pennsylvania; and (2) the Descendants of Richard Prosser (1748-1795) of England. As more participants in the Prosser DNA Project were tested it became evident that Daniel and Richard were related, and that they had a common ancestor. The search for that common ancestor is currently under investigation.
The Haplogroup for Group-01 is defined by SNP R-BY17 (confirmed).

Group-05, John Prosser (1767-1853)
John PROSSER was born circa 1767, probably in Wales. He died circa 1853 in Rome, Oneida County, New York. John married, first, Sarah PLATO, daughter of John H. PLATO, 20 Dec 1786 in Warrensbush, Mohawk town, Montgomery County, New York (now Florida town, Montgomery Co., NY). John and Sarah had a daughter, Elizabeth Prosser, b. 15 Jan 1788 in Coeymans Patent Albany County, New York. It is believed that Sarah died shortly after giving birth to Elizabeth. John married, second, Anna HAYNES, daughter of Solomon HAYNES and Sarah (--?--), 8 Dec 1791 in Warrensbush, Mohawk town, Montgomery County, New York. Anna was born circa 1774 in Dutchess County, New York. She died circa 1857 in Ava town Oneida County, New York.
John and Anna had the following children: (1) George Prosser b. 18 Mar 1793 in Florida town, Montgomery Co., NY, (2) Daniel Prosser b. in Oct 1794 in Florida town, (3) John Prosser b. 8 May 1796 in Florida town, (4) Solomon Prosser b. circa 1800 in Florida town, (5) Catherine Prosser b. circa 1802 in Florida town, (6) Asa Prosser b. in Aug 1809, probably, in Western town, Oneida Co., NY, (7) Anthony Prosser b. circa 1811, probably, in Western town, (8) Isaac Prosser b. circa 1814 in Western town, (9) Wayman Prosser b. circa 1816 in Western town, (10) Lewis Prosser b. circa 1818 in Western town, and [daughter] Prosser b. circa 1820 in Western town. Family legends suggest that two more children may have been born between 1803 and 1808.
The earliest record that we have for John Prosser, upon which his name appears, is a 1783 list of Land Bounty Rights for the Third Regiment of the Tryon County Militia, commanded by Colonel Frederick Visscher. The Third Regiment was largely made up of men conscripted from Mohawk town, Tryon County, New York (now Florida town, Montgomery Co., NY). John Prosser's name appears on the Tax Lists of 1796, 1799, 1802, 1803, and 1804 for Florida town, Montgomery Co., N.Y. No real estate or personal property tax values were given for the years 1796 and 1803. However, his property values and Tax for the other years were as follows: 1799, property value $30, tax 3¢; 1802, property value $58, tax 6¢; and 1804, property value $88, tax 8¢. In 1814, John Prosser is listed on the Tax List for Western town, Oneida County, New York. He was shown as the owner of 100 taxable acres, with 1-improved dwelling and 1-unimproved out building, valued at $550. On 26 Jun 1832, John received clear title to the 100 acres, located on Lot No. 3 in Patent No.4 of Fonda’s Purchase, that he bought from Eli Goodwin prior to 1814. On 20 Mar 1835, John Prosser sold 96 acres on Lot No. 3, in Patent No. 4 of Fonda's Purchase, Western town, Oneida County, New York, to his sons Anthony and Isaac Prosser for $350.00. Free and Clear Titled to the 96 acres was transferred to Anthony and Isaac Prosser, on 21 Sep 1850.

John PROSSER was born 18 Mar 1792 in Madley, Herefordshire, England. He died 5 Apr 1853 in Parkindale, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada. John married Elizabeth LOUNSBURY, daughter of William Lounsbury and Grace Elizabeth Gray, 26 May 1823 in Salisbury Parish, Westmoreland County, New Brunswick. Elizabeth was born 26 Jan 1804 in New Brunswick. She died 27 Sep 1881. Both, John and Elizabeth, were buried in the Prosser Family Cemetery on their homestead property near the community of Parkindale.
John and Elizabeth had the following children: (1) Solomon Prosser b. 30 Nov 1823, (2) Sarah Prosser b. 12 Jun 1826, (3) Mary Jane Prosser b. 26 Dec 1828, (4) William Prosser b. 28 Jul 1831, (5) John Prosser [Jr] b. 1 Jul 1834, (6) Anne Prosser b. 16 Jan 1836, (7) James Prosser b. 12 Feb 1839, (8) Richard Prosser b. 21 Apr 1840, (9) Benjamin Prosser b. 1 Aug 1845, and (10) Matilda Prosser b. 4 Jan 1848.
There is evidence that indicates John Prosser was married prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Lounsbury. His first wife’s name was Elizabeth, as well. They had two children: Philip and Elizabeth. It is thought that John’s first wife may have died sometime during the year 1821 … probably at the Ranger Settlement. The fate of the children by this marriage has not been discovered.
John Prosser, at age 22, while living in England, joined the York Chasseurs on 5 Feb 1814. At the time of enlistment John was described as being 5 ft. 51/2 in. tall, with dark hair and eyes, of sallow complexion, and stout. His trade was listed as a sawyer. During a muster in the summer of 1817, John was listed as a deserter. And, then, later on 31 May 1818, we find John as a member of the Royal West India Rangers Regiment of Infantry … stationed in Antigua. The Royal West India Rangers were disbanded in Saint John, New Brunswick on 24 Jun 1819 at which time John received his discharge. For his service, John was given Lot 110, containing 47 acres of land, located on the west side of the Saint John River … just north of its confluence with the Tobique River … at a location called the Ranger Settlement.

Group-10, Theophilus Prosser (1809-?)
Theophilus PROSSER was born 24 Jun 1809 in St. John, Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada. He died 1 Dec 1864 in City Point, Prince George County, Virginia. Theophilus was interred at the City Point National Cemetery. Theophilus married Hannah STOCKFORD, daughter of Joseph STOCKFORD and Nancy SHERMAN, 21 May 1831 in Brighton Parish, Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada. Hannah was born 4 Apr 1813 in New Brunswick, Canada. She died 26 Aug 1901 in Ionia, Ionia County, Michigan.
Theophilus and Hannah had the following Children: (1) Lydia Prosser b. circa 1832 in Brighton Parish, Carleton Co., NB, (2) Miriam Prosser b. 31 Mar 1834 in Brighton Parish, Carleton Co., NB, (3) Joseph Prosser b. 10 Jun 1836 in NB, (4) Lucinda Prosser b. 29 Jun 1838 in NB, (5) Elisha Prosser b. 10 Aug 1840 in NB, (6) James Prosser b. 12 Jun 1842 in NB, (7) Maria Prosser b. 2 Nov 1842 [probably 1843] in NB, (8) Henrietta Prosser b. 10 Jun 1846 in Keene township, Ionia Co., MI, and (9) Alvah Asa Prosser b. 21 Nov 1851 in Keene township, Ionia Co., MI.
In the various histories of Ionia County, Michigan, reference is often made to a settlement in Keene township of Canadians … led there by James Monks in 1838. In the obituary for Hannah (Stockford) Prosser, 1901, it is stated that she had been a resident of Keene township for 56 years, suggesting that the Theophilus Prosser family migrated to Keene township about 1845.
On February 29, 1864, at age 42, Theophilus enlisted in the Union Army at Grand Rapids, Michigan for the duration of 3 years. He was assigned, along with 326 other recruits, to Company K, 27th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Division. This unit was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 9th Corp, of the Army of the Potomac. The Company was engaged in the “Battle of the Wilderness,” 5-7 May 1864, in Spotsylvania County and Orange County, Virginia; in the “Battle of Bethesda Church,” 28 May 1864, in Hanover County, Virginia; and in the “Siege of Petersburg, Virginia,” which lasted 9-months, 2-weeks and 2-days (9 Jun 1864- 25 Mar 1865). In the first four weeks of fighting, the 27th Michigan lost half its men.
