We would like to encourage all SCHREIER lines to have at least 25 y-chromosome markers tested, or better yet 37 or 67. We believe that testing only 12 markers, the lowest resolution test offered by FamilyTreeDNA.com, really doesn't give sufficient information for genealogical research. You can always test 25 markers and then choose to upgrade your sample at a later date. Large-scale goals of this project include the following highly speculative questions: Where did the SCHREIER family originate? Did it have a common origin in Germany, and then did a large group branch off in the 1700's and migrate east into the edges of the Austro-Hungarian Empire? Or were there multiple origins for this name? How closely related are all the surname variants?
