About us

Welcome to the Sulston DNA Project!

The project was started in October 2008 and is still in its early stages. If you choose to participate in the project you are helping to confirm the existing family trees. But you may also uncover information not provided in the paper records, such as the relationship (if any) between the two surnames of SULSTON and SELSTON. As the project progresses, the results may reveal origins for the surname.

The surnames in this DNA Project are researched as part of the SULSTON one-name study. You can learn more about this research and the associated family trees by visiting the one-name study web site at www.one-name.org/profiles/sulston.html or by contacting the Group Administrator at sulston@one-name.org

To take the Y DNA test, you must be male and have one of the surnames shown. The test tells you about your direct male line - your father, his father etc. If you believe there is a Sulston or variant in your direct male line, even if you carry a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree. We encourage males who order a Y DNA test to order 37 markers. If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.

Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line - their mother, her mother etc. Men and women inherit mtDNA from their mothers, but only women pass it on to future generations. For matches in a genealogical time frame, please order the mtDNA Plus test.
