According to “A History of the Tidwell Family” written by W A Tidwell, the first Tidwell to arrive in Colonial America was Richard Tidwell, who was one of four people transported from England by Richard Nelms.  

This Richard Tidwell appears to be the ancestor of the Tidwell families in America.  According to “Married Well and Often: Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia, 1649-1800”, Richard Tidwell married Anna Barnett, daughter of Peter Barnett.  

According to “A History of the Tidwell Family”, Richard and Anna Tidwell had 5 children:  Richard (born 1679), John, Martha, Peter (born 1688), and Robert (born 1690). 

There seems to be a 6th child who appears in “Married Well and Often”.  It lists  Ann Tidwell, daughter of Richard and Anna Barnett Tidwell and sister of Robert Tidwell married to Charles Brown bef 29 May 1700. (Westmoreland County Order Book 1698-1705)
