About us

Genetic test results reveal that not all Wilcox males share a common ancestor within the last 1000 years, although the origins of the majority of participants are most likely Western European (that is, members of the R1b1a2 haplogroup).

America's three major Wilcox colonial immigrant families are defined by testing thus far; they are descendants of:

  1. Edward and Susan Thomson Wilcox of RI

  2. a) John and Sarah Boone Wilcockson, or b) William and Margaret Willcockson

  3.      John Wilcox of Hartford, CT

Documentation has never been found connecting families 2a and 2b, but genetic testing strongly suggests kinship between them, most likely predating departure from England. A few of their descendants retained the original “–son” form, but many shortened the surname. Spelling is not a reliable indicator of kinship in either clan.

We may be seeing two branches in the Stephen & Hannah Hazzard Wilcox family; with kits 141308, 198709, 46643, 61895, and 21435 forming one branch, and 113017, 129785, 132150, and 121302 forming another. Someone more familiar with the pedigrees in question can perhaps answer this.

A probable descendant of the third major family, sired by John Wilcox of Hartford, CT, has just joined us; his results are distinctive in the context of the project, as his haplogroup is the comparatively uncommon I1.

We now have two consistent sets of data for the John Wilcox of Hartford family. This should be enough to confirm a common ancestor in any further tests which match these two.

Project member and professional genealogist Jane E. Wilcox and project administrator Lisa Wilcox collaborated on an article for the National Genealogical Society magazine, "Derbyshire Crossroads: A Wilcockson DNA case study," January-March 2014. The article recounts how a dedicated group of researchers from the two related Wilcockson clans traced their mutual roots to the British midlands, using clues supplied by both yDNA testing and thorough on-the-ground research in the UK.

January 2016

Testing results for Wilcockson descendants have revealed at least three genetically-distinct Wilcockson clans resident in Derbyshire, England in the 1600s. One Derbyshire Wilcockson family is in fact a genetic member of the Edward and Susan Thomson Wilcox family. These findings suggest that the Wilcockson surname arose independently in multiple locations.

Alan Wilcox (of the Edward and Susan Thomson Wilcox Family) has compiled a comprehensive tree for his family, which promises to be an invaluable aid in making sense of yDNA results. Alan also serves as a clearing house for pedigree information received from new testers.
