FAQ

Q: What testing level is recommended for this project?
A: The Big Y 700 is highly recommended for all project participants.

Q: How long will it take for this project's goals to be met?
A: The project has completed the initial phase of creating a haplotree on which all project members are placed. As is evident from the current haplotree, there are many instances requiring some additional testing by members. The haplotree is updated regularly and will always show the current status of haplotree. As more members test to the minimum recommended levels, the haplotree will become more accurate. As new members arrive, their profiles will be integrated into the haplotree. It is impossible to predict how long it may be before all project members complete the necessary testing.

Q: Can I recruit new members to the project?
A: Any member can invite new members to the project and is encouraged to do so. For example, one may use his own yDNA matching, or results from the another project (such as the J1-YDNA project) to locate persons who are likely to be closely related (i.e. within the same or a nearby haplogroup) and then invite these persons to this project. Inviting anyone with an FTDNA account to the project can be done by providing this URL: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/cherson-family-project/about . The person using this URL can then press the 'JOIN' button in the upper right corner to proceed with the process.

Q: Since my surname isn't on the list, should I be in this project?
A: The time frames being studied in this project include periods well before surnames were commonly used by Jewish people. Descendants of common ancestors from these pre-surname eras are likely to have vastly different surnames today. Therefore, as long as you are in the J-M267 group of sub-branches you may be in this project no matter what surnames your family has used or uses currently.

Q: I am adopted; should I be in this project?
A: There is no reason why any person meeting the J-M267 requirement cannot join the project and benefit from the haplotree.

Q: I am not Jewish; should I be in this project?
A: There is no reason why any person meeting the J-M267 requirement cannot join the project and benefit from the haplotree.

Q: Will I be named in any publications about the project?
A: No, any reporting of project results which is made to the public will use anonymous naming.
