About us

The Loch Lomond Clans have an interest is researching seven clans of Loch Lomond. Our primary focus was originally to sort a more accurate tree via DNA with the Colquhouns, MacArthurs, and the clans they were marrying into.

Quickly we learned as BigY results came back that many descendants of these lines have traced their lineages incorrectly, particularly when it comes to early American members of these clans. Here are examples.

1. When it comes to the Colquhouns, using BigY and autosomal triangulations, we have not yet found any proof that Rev. Alexander has any male descendant lines. We have found proof that he is a member of the branch represented as E-BY165188. So far, our testers who have that haplogroup are NOT descendants of Rev. Alex. Colhoun, but are related to his ancestors, William Campbell Colhoun b. 1643, and Robert Colqhoun, b. 1622. Only descendants of Isobel Colhoun and Mr. Barclay are proven descendants of Rev. Alex. Colhoun via first hand documentation and autosomal triangulations.

2. James (Patrick) Calhoun and Hugh are coming up with the same haplogroup in our YDNA project, but it is NOT the same branch as Rev. Alex. Colhoun. They are related to him through a common ancestor in the mid 1400's. They are NOT descended from him. Their father appears to be Patrick Colquhoun.

3. William, the Scottish Prisoner, is NOT the father of Samuel of Nansemond Co., VA but the stepfather instead. Deliverance was his mother. Her maiden name is unproven. This William is not related to the E-M35 Colquhoun branches listed in examples 1 & 2 abovve.

What is wise to deduct from these examples. Please study your trees for first hand documentation and stop tracing them further back without noting that any additions beyond that are "THEORY" and unverified. It would be better to assume your tree is traced incorrectly in fact beyond documents that were created at the time of the event. These include birth, baptismal, marriage, death, burial, wills, probates, bible, newspaper, land, census and court records.

If you haven't yet purchased a BigY test, they make a huge difference in the understanding of how we all fit together. Please consider stretching for one. Thank you for your participation!
