STR is a quick mutation, is an older technology and cheaper. When you do a basic YDNAtest, you test STR. Usually in order to find a family connection (on your father line) you have to test at least 67 markers and even then sometimes you get confusing results because some of those mutation mutate back and forth and are not regular for time prediction. That is what we called " convergence"
So far FTDNA was able to predict you positive for SNP J1(M267) based on your STR results. J1 M267 is an SNP 40000 years old.
For some of you, FTDNA was able , also based on your STR results, to identify you as belonging to the " Cohanim" line. If you have a this symbol on your kit down left, you can click there , it will get you to the explanation of this study based on 12 STR.
In your kit page you can click also in " STR results" and you will see a lot of DYS associated with numbers. Those DYS are your STR results. Usually ( not always) men who are ZS241 positive have DYS385b≤16
SNP is a "new" technology, more expensive. It ’s a slower kind of mutation, more stable, more predictable in order to calculate time . SNP mutate more or less every 134 years.
You are positive for a SNP or you don't, results are clear. If you share a SNP with someone, for sure you belong to the same branch of the tree and if you know how old is this SNP you can related that with your paper trail. Is what we call genetic-genealogy. You can find connections older than with traditional genealogy.
The only SNP we know about the ones who have not done advanced testing is J1 ( M267) . This SNP is abt 40.000 yold. With each Bigy, FTDNA discover new SNP , new male subranch till nowadays. It is like a family tree. But instead of having surnames you have SNP names. You can check the actual state of the phylogenetic tree clicking on " Haplotree" on your kit and do a search for ZS241.
Researchers do also prediction finding which STR are representative of a specific SNP. They try to group members who have not done advancing testing around a member who has tested SNP , according to their STR similarities.
Our project is free of charge. You don't need to test if you don't want. Your passive presence help Our researchers to group you and other members according to your similarities.
Our project results are not public. Results are only for members, but If you still have privacy concerns, you may change your privacy settings in your kit or you can ask us to switch off your results in our project. This way only admins will be able to see you.
