About us
The MEANA Surname Project is for all who want to know more about their ancestral origins and share common information.
In Spain, there are at least two geographical origins of the surname: one located in Asturias (Meana, de la Meana, Lameana, Lamiana) and the other located in the Basque Country (Meana, de Meana). Whether they share a common genetic origin is currently unknown. Most likely not, as the surname seems to be linked to the local topography, for the Asturian lineage, and the village of Meana (in the county of Treviño, currently part of Burgos), for the Basque lineage.
In Italy, there is at least one lineage located in Lombardy (Meana). Again, very unlikely this lineage will share a common genetic origin with the two Spanish lineages. But it all remains to be seen.
Based on Y-DNA tests performed so far, Meana men having their origins in Asturias are all descendant from two lineages: one characterized by the terminal SNP R1a-KMS36 (R1a lineage) and another one characterized by the terminal SNP R1b-Y186695 (R1b lineage). The R1a lineage descends from Gutierre Fernández de la Meana, established in Caldones (Gijón) at the beginning of the 16th century from the Valle de Abajo in Peón (Villaviciosa). The R1b lineage descends from Francisco Álvarez de la Meana, who was living in the Valle de Arriba in Peón (Villaviciosa) in the mid 16th century. All men whose origins can be traced back to Asturias are encouraged to take a Y-DNA test and join this project.
The haplogroups of the Basque and Lombardy lineages are currently unknown. Therefore, representatives from those lineages are most welcome to join the MEANA Surname Project.
