About us
The Phelps of northeastern North Carolina Project is a regional DNA Project focused on Phelps families with roots in Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington counties. Some of these counties have experienced major record losses over the years, and the loss of those records has made it difficult for some of the Phelps families in northeastern North Carolina to determine the identities and parents of their Phelps ancestors.
This project will accept members who are either planning to do the YDNA test or have already done the YDNA test (you must be a direct line male descendant of a male Phelps from this part of North Carolina), if you are planning to do the mt-DNA test or have already done the mt-DNA test (you must be a direct line female descendant of a female Phelps from this part of North Carolina), and also those who are planning to do the Family Finder test or have done the Family Finder test (you must be a descendant of a male or female Phelps from this part of North Carolina).
If you are a male descendant of Nicholas and Hannah Phelps (Nicholas's widow Hannah and her second husband, Henry Phelps moved to the Albemarle area of North Carolina in the 1600s) then this project is not appropriate for you. You would be considered a part of the New England Phelps line for this couple. If you are a male descendant of Nicholas and Hannah, then you need to contact the Administrator for the Phelps/Felps DNA Project, as this is considered to be a New England Phelps line.
If you are a male and are thinking of doing the YDNA test, then I urge you to also join the Phelps/Felps DNA project, which can be found at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Phelps
