About us
Oct 2007 Our Project continues to grow! We now have 17 participants of the "Rowland" and 5 of the "Roland" spelling! We have established 5 distinct lines and have 9 more awaiting matches. Among these established lines are the 2 lines of colonial Virginia: The one from the Botetourt Co. area and the one from the Surry/Sussex Co. area. Tests have shown that these 2 lines are not even remotely related, even being of different haplotypes! We have also had participants whose ancestors are known to have emigrated from England, Ireland, adn Wales fairly recently...so these are terrific additions to our database!
Sept 2006 To date we have 14 participants in our Project, which is 11 more than we had last year at this time! And we are starting to see some progress! We have 3 matches to the line of Robert Rowland, d 1782 Botetourt Co VA..interestingly one of these is of the surname Oliver with no known connection! We also have a match between a Rowland line in Georgia with a Rowland line in Tennessee that had no previous known connection...so those researchers are trying to put the pieces together there. This line is especially interesting in that the haplogroup is totally different from most of the other lines tested. (Haplogroups indicate where the humans originated that eventually became these people called Rowland.) Also there have been several people transfer into our project from other groups and there have been a couple of matches with these. Unfortunately, they tested at the 12 marker level so more testing is needed to see if this connection is valid. The early ancestors of this line were found in NY and CT. Most exciting is that we have a person from the colonial Surry/Sussex Co VA line that has joined and we are awaiting his results! This should hopefully make some more connections for us!
Jan 2006 Many thanks for the scholarship provided by Kevin West! We now have the results from a well-documented representative of the colonial Botetourt Co VA line of Rowland's! Also waiting on results from a suspected branch of this line found in TN! As a bonus we have had 2 participants join with the Roland spelling, which should really make things interesting!
Oct 1, 2005 Results from our newest participant are in! Seems that his ancestor who came to the USA from Sweden is in no way related to the other 2 Rowland participants so far!

We have one member in our program so far and his results are listed. He is from the Wake County, NC line that is descended from William Rowland, died 1794.
