This is one project member's experience:
My name is Dennis Butt. For decades my mission has been to identify the unknown parents of my gr gr grandfather, Basil (Bazil)Butt. Some of the best researchers on the planet have, for decades, focused on this mission as well. Recently I submitted a kit to FTDNA, and with it we've been able to sort out who belongs to which BUTT family. It seems clear now that there were probably at least three genetically different BUTT families, which I previously thought were all one. There is no other way, to my knowledge, that we could have made this determination. And exciting to me is the fact that, with another recently submitted kit, we"ve been able to positively identify someone whose ancestor was probably one of Basil's three brothers. More progress towards my mission has been made in the last year with DNA testing than was made in the preceding 50 years.
Doug Israel is offering to pay for the cost of DNA testing for any male with the surname Butt or Butts who believes they are related to John Luther Butt (1831 - 1897). John Luther Butt married Matilda Offutt 1840-1907, and they had at least seven children: Luther Southern Butt, Howard Montgomery Butt, Cora Butt, Harriet Butt, Mary Cornelia Butt, Belinda Butt, and Mosby Oldridge Butt. It is believed that John Luther's father was probably a Basil Butt, with a brother named Rignal. It was believed that their roots went back to Norfolk, Va with the family moving thru Berkeley County (VA / WVA) before their settling in southeastern MD.
