Help us help you find your family.

The Butt Family DNA Project currently has 39 participants with 38 completed DNA tests.

Seven distinctive lines have been identified and are described below, identified by the Most Distant Known Ancestor. Only two of the lines have more than one participant at this time.
The various family lines are:

1. Addison Butt (abt. 1782-1844) m. Elinor Glenn, migrated from near Fincastle, VA to Pulaski County, KY in 1807.Children include Sarah F “Sallie” Butt (1803 -), William Butt (1807-1873), Thomas Butts (1810-1891), Nancy Butt (1815-1876), Reuben H. Butt (1817 -), Delilah Butt (1819-1847) and Archibald D. Butt (1820-1904). Father of Addison may have been named Archibald. A complete descendant report is available at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/u/t/Thomas-K-Butt/ (Kit no. 7732)

2. Samuel Butt b. 1777; Basil/Bazil Butt (1797-1854) m. Mahala Green. Basil and Mahala raised a large family in Licking County, Ohio. It is believed that Basil had three brothers, John, Richard and Rignall and that the four boys were raised by a Richard Butt who in his 1810, Berkeley County, VA/WV will referred to four boys with these names, as "my four nephews that I raised". The parents of the four boys are unknown as is their place(s) of birth. Practically nothing more is known about this Richard Butt. It is also not certain that this Richard Butt was referring in his will to these four boys, including Basil. The spellings of the names in the will are: "Richard Butt, John Butt, Rignall Butt and Basill Butt".

From DNA we know that Basil Butt who married Mahala Green and John Butt who married first Gracey Marlay and then Sarah Huston, had a common male ancestor. This we know from the tests of Dennis W. Butt and Kenneth Allen Butt. We also know from DNA that the common male ancestor was a Butt belonging to the same Butt family as does Thomas Didimus Butt, born 2/15/1801 in Virginia. This we know from the test of Eugene Butts and the corresponding family tree he submitted.

Kit 60717 Descendants include Morgan Green Butt (1842-1909), son of Basil Butt and wife Mahala, Squire George Butt (1880-1924), Henry Morgan Butt (1906-1979), and Dennis William Butt. Kit 18079 descendants include Hazel Rignol Butt (1841-1861), also a son of Basil Butt and wife Mahala, Miles Edward Butt (1863-1913), Cecil Orr Butte (1892-1941) and Charles David Butte. (Kit no. 18079 and 60717).

3. Robert Butt (c.1603-1676), who may have been involved in the re-organization of the Virginia Company in 1624, was reported to have immigrated from England to the area that became Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, in the period of 1640-1690. He was married to Jane Bruce. His descendants include the descendents of his sons Richard, Henry, Thomas and Robert, and daughter, Jane. Included in these descendents are Marshall W. Butt (1896-1975; Richard), noted author, Capt. Archibald W. Butt (1866-1912; Henry), of Titanic fame, and Sheldon Hutchison Butt (1919-1994; Thomas) engineer and noted inventor (bi-metal US quarters and copper tubing). Please see our website at http://

4. Richard (1775-1837, Decsendants include Shannon Butt, Leonidas Butt, a Methodist pastor, and Dr. Arthur Parker Butt of Elkins, WV, originally of Winchester, VA. (Kit no. 50167)

5. Thomas Butts (1778-1848), born in Washington County, MD. It is believed that Thomas was married in Maryland to a widow having the surname Jerome. They had two sons named Samuel and George both of whom were born in Maryland. It is believed that Thomas Butt appears in the 1810 Federal Census as living in Washington County, MD. Thomas and his family moved to Shelby County Ohio by 1815. By the mid-1830s Thomas and his new wife, Elizabeth, moved to Randolph County, IN where he had three more children including Nathan Thomas Butts (1838-1902). Nathan's son was Macy Emerson Butts (1875-1925. descendants include Herbert Emerson Butts (1910-1999) and Robert Emerson Richards. (Kit n. 7884)

6. William Hedley Butt (1896-1988) was born in Bristol, England and married Gladys Elsie Sims (1898-1884). Descendants include Cecil Roy Butt (1929 – Oxford, England) and Michael John Butt (1952 - Ipswich, Suffolk, England) (Kit no. N12398)
