About us
As of November 2024, we have 279 members in the O'Shea yDNA Project. We welcome males with Shea, O'Shea, McShea or Shay patrilineal ancestry to do a yDNA test and join the project. [updated November 2024]
We recommend Big Y testing as it is the most comprehensive and useful yDNA test.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The O'Shea Surname yDNA Project has been ongoing since early 2003. Over the years, we have had some generous financial contributions, which helped us to sponsor kits and upgrades, mainly for Irish-based O'Sheas. Some of these results can be treated as "benchmarks" for O'Sheas in counties such as Kerry and other counties strongly associated with O'Sheas in the past. With Big Y testing, we have established much more structure in the various O'Shea subgroups in the project, some of which are down to recent family lines.
We always need more Irish-based O'Sheas who know their O'Shea family history to help the O'Shea diaspora to re-connect with their Irish roots. Irish-based O'Sheas can also re-connect with relatives who emigrated in hard times. So, we want to encourage Irish-based O'Sheas to do the simple mouth swab and help us progress the project. On the Family Tree DNA results webpage, the Family Tree DNA Results Chart shows the results grouped to reflect our analysis. [updated March 2024]
